🌧️⚠️ WHY LAST WEEK'S FLOODING WAS SO SEVERE — AND WHAT BETHLEHEM CAN LEARN FROM IT ⚠️🌧️

Last week's devastating storm wasn't just another heavy rain event—it became one of the most significant flash flood events ever recorded in the Capital Region.

For residents of Bethlehem, Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands, Selkirk, New Scotland, Voorheesville, and the RCS community, understanding why it happened is important as our region continues to recover and prepare for future storms.

According to meteorologists, three major weather ingredients came together at the same time:

🌪️ Two unusually strong low-pressure systems interacted over New York.

💧 An exceptional amount of tropical moisture was pulled into the region, providing an almost endless supply of rain.

🐢 Slow-moving thunderstorms repeatedly passed over the same communities, allowing inches of rain to fall on the same locations for hours.

Instead of quickly moving through the area, these storms stalled, producing rainfall totals that overwhelmed streams, drainage systems, roads, and neighborhoods.

At Albany International Airport, 5.45 inches of rain fell on July 29, making it the second-highest single-day rainfall total ever recorded at the airport.

Across the Capital Region, many locations received 5 to 10 inches of rain, while some communities Just to the East & South of Albany measured more than 11 inches in just 24 hours.

Many of us experienced the storm firsthand.

Residents across Bethlehem saw:
🚧 Road closures
🏡 Flooded basements
🌳 Downed trees
🚒 Numerous emergency responses by local fire departments
🌊 Overflowing streams and standing water
🏞️ Temporary closures of parks and public facilities

Communities throughout the Capital Region—including Bethlehem, New Scotland, Coeymans, Ravena, Albany, and surrounding towns—were affected in different ways, reminding us how vulnerable our area can be to extreme rainfall.

Meteorologists began highlighting the risk for excessive rainfall several days before the storm arrived. As updated weather data became available, the threat level increased, allowing emergency managers and local officials to begin preparing before the heaviest rain fell.

While forecasts cannot pinpoint exactly where every flash flood will occur, last week's event demonstrates how important it is to take Flash Flood Watches and Warnings seriously.

A proposed large-scale battery energy storage facility in the Town of New Scotland is generating significant discussion as residents weigh the benefits of clean energy against concerns about safety, location, and transparency.

The proposal by New Leaf Energy would place a battery storage system made up of multiple container-sized lithium battery units in a residential area near an electrical substation.

This is more than just a New Scotland issue. As New York continues its transition toward renewable energy, battery storage facilities are expected to become more common throughout the Capital Region, meaning similar proposals could eventually arise in other communities, including Bethlehem and surrounding towns.

Residents attending public meetings have raised several questions, including:

🏡 Whether large battery storage facilities belong near residential neighborhoods.

🚒 How local emergency responders would handle a battery fire if one were to occur.

🌿 The potential environmental impacts should a battery system become damaged or catch fire.

⚖️ Questions surrounding the proposed site's ownership and whether a member of the Town Board should be involved with a project on property he owns.

State officials note that battery storage plays an increasingly important role in improving electric grid reliability, reducing brownouts, and supporting renewable energy. Since a major battery fire in northern New York in 2023, thousands of New York firefighters have received specialized training for responding to battery storage incidents, and safety standards for these facilities have continued to evolve.

Supporters say battery storage is essential to New York's clean energy future. Opponents argue that while the technology may be necessary, residential neighborhoods may not be the appropriate location.

As discussions continue, local officials will be tasked with balancing neighborhood concerns, public safety, environmental considerations, and the state's long-term energy goals.

Beginning Monday, August 3, through Sunday, August 9, the New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies are participating in a statewide speed enforcement campaign aimed at reducing crashes and improving roadway safety.

Whether you're:

🏕️ Heading out on summer vacation
🛍️ Running errands around town
⚽ Traveling to youth sports
🚙 Commuting to work

...this is a good reminder to slow down and drive safely.

Local roads such as Delaware Avenue (Route 443), Route 9W, Route 32, New Scotland Road (Route 85), Feura Bush Road, Kenwood Avenue, Elm Avenue, and many neighborhood streets often see heavy traffic during the summer months. Increased enforcement means drivers should expect officers to be watching for speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors.

During the state's first summer speed enforcement campaign in June, law enforcement officers issued more than 56,000 traffic tickets statewide, including over 14,000 speeding violations.

State officials say speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes in New York.

Slowing down by just a few miles per hour can:
✅ Give drivers more time to react
✅ Reduce the severity of crashes
✅ Help protect pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists
✅ Keep everyone safer on our local roads
