A young barred owl found weak and severely underweight at John Boyd Thacher State Park is getting a second chance — and his next lesson may be learning how to hunt for his own dinner! 🦉🐭

The owl was discovered over the weekend sitting on the ground in the middle of a park trail during daylight hours. Even more concerning, the bird made little effort to move or fly away when a park ranger approached.

🌲 FROM THACHER PARK TO REHAB

Park Ranger Josh Horth carefully collected the owl and got him into the hands of wildlife rehabilitator Gerry Engstrom of Raptors Rest in Voorheesville.

Initially, there was concern that the owl could be suffering from West Nile virus, which can be deadly to raptors. But there is now some encouraging news. ❤️

The young owl has been eating, drinking and exploring his enclosure, and an examination reportedly found no broken bones, obvious head trauma or other physical injuries.

Instead, Engstrom suspects the owl simply may not have developed the hunting skills necessary to feed himself after becoming independent.

🐭🎓 NEXT STOP: “MOUSE SCHOOL!”

Right now, the owl still relies on food being offered to him. The rehabilitation process will gradually encourage him to recognize and capture food on his own.

Eventually, he could advance to what Engstrom affectionately calls “mouse school,” where the owl will practice the hunting skills he’ll need to survive in the wild.

As those skills improve, he can progress into larger enclosures and continue preparing for a possible return to nature.

🦉 WILL “HOOTIE” RETURN TO THACHER PARK?

That’s the hope!

Engstrom is cautiously encouraged by the owl’s progress, but the bird was found very thin and clearly had not been consuming enough food.

Timing will also matter. With winter approaching and prey becoming more difficult to find, the young owl will need to regain his strength and demonstrate that he can successfully hunt.

If he isn’t ready before winter conditions arrive, he may remain in rehabilitation until spring.

❤️ For now, this little owl has something important on his side — people willing to give him the care, time and training he needs for another shot at life in the wild.

💙👵👴 NEW NAME, SAME MISSION: MEET “FRIENDS OF BETHLEHEM SENIORS!” 🚗🥫🤝

A longtime Bethlehem nonprofit is getting a fresh identity after 40 years of supporting local seniors.

Bethlehem Senior Projects is now officially Friends of Bethlehem Seniors — or FOBS. 🎉

The organization says the new name better communicates what it actually does: raise money and secure grants to help strengthen programs and services provided to Bethlehem’s senior residents.

💙 WHAT DOES FOBS SUPPORT?

Friends of Bethlehem Seniors works in partnership with the Town of Bethlehem Senior Services Department, helping provide financial support for several important community programs, including:

🚗 Transportation for seniors
🥫 The Town of Bethlehem food pantry
❤️ Wellness programs
🗣️ Educational speakers and programs
🎉 Social activities
💰 Additional services benefiting Bethlehem seniors

And the numbers show just how significant that support can be.

🚙 19,330 RIDES IN 2025

Fundraising by the organization helped support 19,330 rides covering 106,720 volunteer miles in 2025.

Volunteer drivers help Bethlehem seniors get to medical appointments within the program's service area as well as grocery stores, pharmacies, polling places and other important destinations.

⚡️🚙 NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES EXPAND TRANSPORTATION

FOBS also helped secure grant funding toward the recent purchase of two all-electric Chevrolet Equinox vehicles for Bethlehem Senior Services.

According to Senior Services Director William Vail, adding the vehicles has significantly expanded the department's ability to provide rides.

🥫 HELPING BETHLEHEM FAMILIES

FOBS fundraising also helps purchase food for the Town's food pantry and supports other resources that can help meet specific dietary needs.

In 2025, the Bethlehem food pantry served 739 local households, including both individuals and families.

The organization is also supporting efforts to identify a larger location for the pantry outside Town Hall, potentially providing additional space and greater privacy for residents using the service.

💰 WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

According to Friends of Bethlehem Seniors, approximately 95% of the money it raises goes toward programs and services, with a current annual fundraising goal of roughly $25,000.

Funding comes from grants, donations, bequests and an annual fundraiser.

🌟 A NEW CHAPTER AFTER 40 YEARS

The nonprofit hopes its new name will make its relationship with Bethlehem Senior Services easier for residents to recognize while encouraging more community support.

Along with the rebranding, Friends of Bethlehem Seniors has launched a new website where residents can learn more about the organization and its work.

Forty years later, the name may be changing — but the mission of helping Bethlehem's seniors remains firmly in place. ❤️🏡

The problem is:

3 − 3 × 3 + 1

The key is remembering PEMDAS / Order of Operations. Multiplication comes before addition and subtraction.

3 × 3 = 9

Now we have:

3 − 9 + 1

When only addition and subtraction remain, work from left to right.

3 − 9 = −6

Then:

−6 + 1 = −5

A common mistake is solving 3 − 3 = 0 first. But subtraction does not come before multiplication, even though it appears first in the expression.

Multiplication and division first → then addition and subtraction from left to right.
