🐟🌊 LISTEN CLOSELY... THE HUDSON RIVER IS THUNDERING! 🌊🐟

🐟🌊 LISTEN CLOSELY... THE HUDSON RIVER IS THUNDERING! 🌊🐟
It sounds a bit like distant thunder. Or maybe a heavy safe being dragged across a floor far away.
But what scientists recently recorded beneath the waters of the Hudson River is something far more remarkable...
🐟 Atlantic Sturgeon "Thunder."
Researchers studying one of New York's most ancient and endangered fish species have captured thousands of low-frequency rumbling sounds made by Atlantic sturgeon as they gather to spawn in the Hudson River.
Some of these prehistoric giants can grow to an incredible 14 feet long and have swum in our waters since the age of the dinosaurs! 🦖
🔬 Scientists from Cornell University, the New York State Water Resources Institute, and the Department of Environmental Conservation recorded more than 7,600 sturgeon "thunders" near Hyde Park, one of the Hudson's known spawning grounds.
Researchers believe the sounds are connected to the spawning process and could become a valuable tool in helping scientists better understand and protect this endangered species.
🐟 Did You Know?
📍 Atlantic sturgeon were once so plentiful in the Hudson River they earned the nickname "Albany Beef."
🥚 Female sturgeon can carry dozens of pounds of caviar.
⚠️ Overfishing nearly wiped out the species, leading New York to close the sturgeon fishery in the late 1990s.
🛡️ Atlantic sturgeon have been federally protected under the Endangered Species Act since 2012.
Today, scientists continue working to understand why sturgeon choose certain areas of the Hudson River to spawn and how to help the population recover.
🚤 Threats still remain, including:
⚠️ Boat strikes
⚠️ Habitat challenges
⚠️ Accidental capture in commercial fishing nets
The discovery of these underwater "thunders" may help researchers identify additional spawning grounds and strengthen conservation efforts throughout the Hudson River.
🌊 Here in the Capital Region, we're fortunate to have one of America's most important rivers flowing right through our backyard—and it continues to reveal new secrets every year.
💬 Have you ever seen a sturgeon in the Hudson River? Were you aware these incredible fish still call our region home?

🚨👨👩👧👦 ALBANY COUNTY LAWMAKERS PROPOSE PARENT ACCOUNTABILITY BILL FOR JUVENILE CRIMES 👨👩👧👦🚨

🚨👨👩👧👦 ALBANY COUNTY LAWMAKERS PROPOSE PARENT ACCOUNTABILITY BILL FOR JUVENILE CRIMES 👨👩👧👦🚨
A new bipartisan proposal in Albany County could require parents and guardians to play a more active role when minors enter the juvenile justice system.
County legislators have introduced legislation that would require parents or guardians of juvenile offenders to complete mandatory parenting classes when their child commits certain crimes.
📋 Under the proposal:
✅ Parents would be referred to existing county-funded family support programs
✅ Judges would order participation as part of the juvenile justice process
✅ Parents who refuse to participate could be assigned community service
✅ No jail time or fines are proposed
Republican Legislator Frank Mauriello said the idea was inspired by a series of violent incidents during last year's Fourth of July celebrations that resulted in a teenager's death and a home being destroyed by fire.
💬 "I thought to myself, 'Where are the parents?'" Mauriello said.
Democratic Legislator Mark Robinson joined the effort, emphasizing that early intervention begins at home.
💬 "The child's first teaching begins at home. We have to identify what's lacking in that home environment," Robinson said.
Supporters say the goal is not punishment, but helping families connect with resources that already exist throughout Albany County.
📚 Lawmakers note that dozens of county-funded family support programs are already available but are often underutilized because families may not know about them.
⚖️ The proposal would apply to cases involving youth covered under New York's "Raise the Age" law.
A public hearing on the legislation is expected to take place on July 28, with a potential vote as early as August.
The proposal is already generating discussion about where responsibility lies when juveniles commit serious offenses and whether greater parental involvement could help prevent future crimes.
💬 What are your thoughts?
Should parents be required to participate in intervention programs when their children enter the juvenile justice system?
👍 Yes
😮 Depends on the situation
👎 No
