SKYROCKETING ELECTRIC BILLS & AI DATA CENTERS! WHO'S GOING TO PAY THE PRICE?

⚡💰 SKYROCKETING ELECTRIC BILLS & AI DATA CENTERS! WHO'S GOING TO PAY THE PRICE? 🏠🏭🗳️

📍 NEW YORK — ENERGY COSTS ARE TAKING CENTER STAGE IN THE 2026 ELECTIONS!

If you've opened your National Grid bill lately and wondered why you're paying so much, you're certainly not alone!

Rising electricity and natural gas costs are becoming major issues in New York's race for governor and several congressional contests.

And now, another concern is entering the conversation: Could energy-hungry AI data centers push utility bills even higher? 🤖⚡

💸 HOW MUCH HAVE ELECTRIC BILLS INCREASED?

According to a Times Union report:

🔴 Residential electricity bills across New York have increased approximately 50% over the past five years.

🔴 Average residential NYSEG bills nearly doubled between 2021 and 2025.

🔴 A Lake George business owner reported receiving a utility bill nearly $3,000 higher than the previous month.

For families, seniors on fixed incomes, and small businesses, these increases can put serious pressure on household and operating budgets.

🏛️ WHAT ARE THE CANDIDATES PROPOSING?

🔵 Gov. Kathy Hochul (Democrat) points to $1 billion in one-time energy relief, efforts to hold utilities accountable, and restrictions on large data center development.

🔴 Bruce Blakeman (Republican) has pledged to cut utility rates in half, criticizing New York's energy policies and proposing expanded natural gas development. However, a detailed plan for achieving that reduction has not been released.

Other proposals being discussed include reducing utility taxes and fees, expanding battery storage, improving energy efficiency, and changing how utility companies are regulated.

⚡ WHO APPROVES UTILITY RATE INCREASES?

New York's Public Service Commission (PSC) reviews and approves utility rate increases.

Its seven members are appointed by the governor with state Senate approval.

That makes utility affordability an important state government issue, regardless of which political party holds office.

🤖🏭 THE AI DATA CENTER DEBATE

Large AI data centers can consume enormous amounts of electricity to operate servers and cooling systems.

While these facilities have not been responsible for New York's recent utility rate increases, their potential expansion has raised questions about future energy demand and infrastructure costs.

Governor Hochul introduced a statewide moratorium in July targeting certain large data center developments.

Supporters argue that restrictions can help protect residential customers from additional costs.

Opponents warn that limiting development could discourage investment, technology growth, and new jobs.

💡 THE BIG QUESTION: WHO PAYS FOR THE ELECTRICITY AND INFRASTRUCTURE?

As New York considers new data centers and other energy-intensive industries, policymakers face difficult questions:

⚡ Should large electricity users pay the full cost of infrastructure upgrades needed to serve them?

🏠 How can residential customers be protected from additional rate increases?

🏭 Can New York attract new businesses while keeping electricity affordable?

💰 What long-term solutions will actually lower utility bills?

📍 WHY THIS MATTERS TO BETHLEHEM, RCS & VOORHEESVILLE

Whether you live in Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands, Selkirk, Ravena, or Voorheesville, energy affordability affects nearly everyone.

From heating our homes to operating local businesses, electricity and natural gas costs are an important part of our monthly budgets.

And with winter approaching, many households are watching those bills especially closely. ❄️

💬 BETHLEHEM LOCAL NEWS WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU!

⚡ Have your electric or natural gas bills increased significantly over the past few years?

🤖 Should large AI data centers be required to cover their own additional electricity and infrastructure costs?

🏛️ What should New York's next governor prioritize to make energy more affordable?

BETHLEHEM UNVEILS $73.6 MILLION CAPITAL PLAN! WHAT'S GETTING FIXED — AND WHAT WILL IT COST TAXPAYERS?

PHOTO CREDIT: Bethlehem Local News Staff Photo

🏗️💰 BETHLEHEM UNVEILS $73.6 MILLION CAPITAL PLAN! WHAT'S GETTING FIXED — AND WHAT WILL IT COST TAXPAYERS? 🏡🚧

📍 BETHLEHEM, NY — BIG INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS COULD BE COMING!

The Town of Bethlehem has introduced a proposed $73.6 MILLION five-year capital improvement plan for 2027–2031, outlining major investments in roads, sidewalks, water and sewer systems, parks, and municipal buildings.

The proposal was presented during the October 14 Town Board meeting by Chief Accountant Cherie Gitto.

🏗️ WHERE WOULD THE MONEY GO?

Some of the major projects planned for 2027 include:

🚶 Sidewalk Projects: Approximately $5 million in sidewalk-related work, plus $250,000 for sidewalk replacement.

💧 Water Meter Replacement: $1.9 million.

🚛 Sanitation Equipment & Vehicles: Nearly $700,000.

🌳 Park Improvements: Approximately $515,000 for upgrades at North Bethlehem and Elm Avenue parks.

🏛️ Bethlehem Town Hall: $1.29 million in building upgrades.

Additional investments are planned for water treatment, sewer infrastructure, and other essential municipal facilities.

📊 $60 MILLION IN THE FIRST THREE YEARS!

Approximately 82% of the proposed $73.6 million would be spent during the first three years, reflecting several large infrastructure projects.

The overall five-year proposal is also lower than last year's projection, partly because previously planned projects have been completed.

💵 HOW WOULD BETHLEHEM PAY FOR IT?

The town expects to use several funding sources, including:

💰 $31.57 million in new borrowing.

🏦 $16.25 million from capital reserves.

🎯 $11.4 million in anticipated grants.

Additional funding would come from other sources.

Town officials emphasized that projects dependent on grants would not move forward until that funding is secured.

⚠️ WHAT ABOUT PROPERTY TAXES?

The plan includes projections showing how new borrowing could affect taxpayers.

For a home assessed at $250,000, the presentation estimated the following annual tax-bill impacts associated with the borrowing plan:

🏠 2028: $36.89

🏠 2029: $164.67

🏠 2030: $295.76

🏠 2031: $289.11

🏠 2032: $315.80

These are projections associated with the capital borrowing plan, not the homeowner's total property tax bill or an approved tax increase.

🌲 WHAT ABOUT OPEN SPACE PRESERVATION?

The proposal comes amid ongoing discussions about balancing infrastructure spending with Bethlehem's commitment to preserving farmland, forests, and open space.

The town's Farms and Forests Fund currently holds approximately $1.6 million.

Bethlehem has spent about $2.47 million to preserve 508 acres, including land at Heath Farm, North Street, and the community forest.

🏛️ IS THE $73.6 MILLION PLAN APPROVED?

NO — NOT YET!

This is a proposed long-term planning document.

Individual projects still require the necessary budget authorization, borrowing approval, or grant funding before proceeding.

Town officials say the plan will continue to be reviewed and updated as priorities and financial conditions change.

💬 BETHLEHEM — WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

With millions in infrastructure improvements proposed, residents have some important questions to consider:

🚶 Should sidewalks and pedestrian safety be a top priority?

💧 Are water and sewer infrastructure investments overdue?

🏛️ Should Town Hall upgrades receive $1.29 million?

🌳 How should Bethlehem balance infrastructure spending with open space preservation?

💰 And most importantly, how much additional borrowing should taxpayers be comfortable with?

SUNDAY MORNING MATH PUZZLER SOLVED!

🧮☀️ SUNDAY MORNING MATH PUZZLER — HERE'S THE ANSWER! 🎉

Today's Puzzle:

12 ÷ 6 × 3! = ?

✅ STEP 1: Remember PEMDAS!

The exclamation mark (!) means factorial.

Factorials are calculated before multiplication and division.

STEP 2: Solve the factorial first. 🔢

3! = 3 × 2 × 1 = 6

Now our problem becomes:

12 ÷ 6 × 6

STEP 3: Work from LEFT to RIGHT! ➗✖️

Multiplication and division have equal priority, so we solve them in the order they appear.

12 ÷ 6 = 2

Now we have:

2 × 6 = 12

🎯🏆 THE CORRECT ANSWER IS 12!

💡 REMEMBER: Factorials first! Then multiplication and division from left to right.
