🐟🌿 TROUT, STREAMS & OUTDOOR ADVENTURE! RCS STUDENTS RELEASE TROUT INTO COEYMANS CREEK 🌿🐟

Learning came to life for students at Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School as they wrapped up another exciting year participating in the Trout in the Classroom program! 🎣💧

Throughout the school year, students explored trout ecology, conservation, watersheds, ecosystems, and water quality through this hands-on environmental education experience. While this year's trout eggs did not successfully hatch, students gained a valuable lesson about the challenges and unpredictability of working with living organisms.

Thanks to fingerling trout provided through the program, students were still able to observe the growth and development of the fish firsthand. They spent months caring for the trout, monitoring water conditions, and learning what it takes to maintain a healthy aquatic environment. 🌎🐟

The program's grand finale took place in May when Pieter B.'s fifth graders traveled to South Bethlehem Park to release the trout into Coeymans Creek with assistance from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The day offered much more than a fish release! Students:

🔍 Searched for aquatic insects that help indicate stream health
🎨 Created watercolor paintings using creek water
🎣 Learned fly-fishing casting techniques from local volunteers
🌿 Explored the importance of protecting local waterways and ecosystems

Programs like Trout in the Classroom provide unforgettable experiences that connect science, conservation, and outdoor learning while helping students develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world right here in our community.

👏 A big thank you to the teachers, volunteers, NYSDEC staff, and everyone who helped make this year's program a success!

💊🚨 ALBANY COUNTY RECEIVES MORE OPIOID SETTLEMENT FUNDING TO FIGHT ADDICTION 🚨💊

💊🚨 ALBANY COUNTY RECEIVES MORE OPIOID SETTLEMENT FUNDING TO FIGHT ADDICTION 🚨💊

Albany County will receive an additional $4.6 million over the next 12 years as part of nationwide opioid settlements with pharmaceutical companies, including CVS and Walgreens, county officials announced this week.

The funding is intended to help communities address the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic and support prevention, recovery, and treatment programs throughout the county. ❤️

To date, Albany County has already received:
💰 $8.4 million in opioid settlement funds

And now, county leaders are putting the next round of funding to work.

🏥 First Round of Grants Announced

County Executive Dan McCoy announced that:
💵 $460,000 in grants

will be awarded to organizations focused on addiction recovery and prevention.

The funding includes:

🤝 $200,000 for Healthy Capital District's Certified Recovery Peer Advocate Program

This program connects individuals seeking recovery with trained peer advocates who have experienced addiction themselves and can help guide others through treatment and recovery.

🏫 $260,000 for the Addiction Care Center of Albany's School-Based Prevention Program

The funding will help expand prevention and education efforts into additional schools, including:

📚 Voorheesville Middle School
📚 Berne-Knox-Westerlo Middle School
📚 Albany Leadership Academy

❤️ Prevention and Recovery Remain Priorities

County officials emphasized that while opioid-related deaths have declined significantly in recent years, the work is far from over.

📉 Albany County recorded 58 opioid-related deaths last year.

While that represents a substantial decline from four years ago, addiction continues to impact families and communities throughout the Capital Region.

🏡 Why This Matters Locally

Substance abuse and addiction affect communities of every size, including many families right here in Albany County.

Programs funded through these settlement dollars help provide:

Prevention education for students
Recovery support services
Community outreach programs
Access to treatment resources

Many local leaders view these funds as an opportunity to help prevent future addiction while supporting those already on the path to recovery.

❤️ Every life saved matters.
