Could the Winter Olympics be coming back to New York?

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the creation of an Exploratory Committee to study the possibility of bringing the 2042 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to New York State.

The committee will spend the next year evaluating whether a unique partnership between Lake Placid and New York City could successfully host the Games while making financial sense for taxpayers and local communities.

🏔️ Lake Placid already boasts a rich Olympic history, having hosted the Winter Games in 1932 and 1980, including the legendary "Miracle on Ice" hockey victory.

💰 New York State has invested approximately $750 million in modernizing Lake Placid’s Olympic facilities in recent years, and several venues are already serving as backup competition sites for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

📋 The committee will review:
✅ Infrastructure and venue readiness
✅ Financial impacts and economic opportunities
✅ Community engagement and local concerns
✅ Transportation and operations
✅ Potential partnerships between urban and rural regions

🌆 State leaders say combining the global stage of New York City with the Olympic legacy of Lake Placid could create a uniquely New York experience unlike any previous Winter Games.

⚠️ This is not an official Olympic bid. The committee will spend the next year studying the idea and then submit recommendations before any decision is made.

🏆 If approved in the future, the 2042 Games would mark more than 60 years since Lake Placid last hosted the Winter Olympics.

⚡🔌 BIG BOOST FOR NEW YORK'S POWER GRID — AND LOWER ELECTRIC BILLS! 💡💰

New York officials are celebrating the completion of Smart Path Connect, a major 100-mile transmission project designed to strengthen the state's electric grid, improve reliability, and help meet growing energy demands. ⚡🏗️

The project is expected to:

✅ Increase grid capacity by 1 gigawatt
✅ Reduce transmission congestion
✅ Expand access to clean energy sources
✅ Improve overall reliability
✅ Save residential customers about $1 per month on electric bills 💵

State leaders say New York’s energy needs are rapidly changing as manufacturing grows, new industries emerge, and electricity demand continues to increase across the state.

🔋 Smart Path Connect is part of the larger Upstate Upgrade Program, which includes more than 70 transmission projects aimed at modernizing New York’s energy infrastructure.

Officials estimate the project could generate more than $438 million in annual savings for customers while helping move renewable energy from the North Country to homes and businesses across the state.

⚠️ The announcement comes as the New York Independent System Operator reports the state's power grid is expected to operate with its smallest surplus capacity ever this summer, highlighting the importance of infrastructure investments to meet future demand.

⚡🏭 HUDSON VALLEY POWER PLANT FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY — WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR NEW YORK'S ENERGY FUTURE? 🔋⚠️

A major energy facility in the Hudson Valley is facing financial trouble at a time when New York’s electric grid is already under increasing pressure.

The Danskammer Power Plant in Newburgh has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, reporting approximately $13 million in debt, including nearly $11.8 million owed to the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) and more than $760,000 in unpaid property taxes.

While Danskammer operates primarily as a "peaker plant"—providing electricity during periods of high demand—it remains a critical part of the Lower Hudson Valley's energy supply.

⚠️ Grid operators warn that closing the facility too soon could create reliability concerns.

As a result, NYISO is requiring the plant to remain operational through at least August, and potentially into January 2027, while alternative energy sources are developed.

🔹 The Lower Hudson Valley could face significant electricity shortfalls by 2029.
🔹 Growing demand from homes, businesses, industry, and electrification efforts continues to strain the grid.

🌱 Environmental groups say they hope Danskammer's future could include cleaner energy alternatives, but questions remain about what comes next for the site and the region's energy supply.

The key is remembering the Order of Operations (PEMDAS):

Many people mistakenly think you must do all multiplication before division. That's not correct.

Multiplication and division have equal priority, so you work from left to right.

24 ÷ 6 = 4

Now the problem becomes:

4 × 6 ÷ 3

4 × 6 = 24

Now:

24 ÷ 3

24 ÷ 3 = 8

8

Some people incorrectly do:

6 × 6 = 36

Then:

24 ÷ 36 ÷ 3

This changes the original order of the problem and produces the wrong result.

Remember:

➡️ Multiplication and division are performed in the order they appear from left to right.

When multiplication and division are together, always work from LEFT TO RIGHT.
