📍 SELKIRK, NY — School bus safety is taking center stage across New York State as law enforcement agencies prepare for Operation Safe Stop on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, a statewide enforcement initiative targeting drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses.

And right here in our community, the numbers are concerning!

🚨 More than 100 citations were issued in the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (RCS) Central School District during the last school year for drivers illegally passing school buses with their stop-arms extended.

In March, 12-year-old Wyatt Bunce narrowly escaped being struck by a vehicle that failed to stop as he was getting off his school bus.

Wyatt was forced to run to avoid the approaching vehicle.

New York State Trooper Damir Svraka was among the officers involved in apprehending the driver responsible.

The frightening incident serves as an important reminder that failing to stop for a school bus can have devastating consequences.

On Wednesday, October 21, law enforcement officers across New York will increase their focus on school bus safety.

🚔 Police will follow school buses along their morning routes.

📹 Officers will monitor violations captured by school bus stop-arm cameras.

⚠️ Drivers who illegally pass stopped buses may face citations and additional penalties.

Although Operation Safe Stop is a one-day statewide campaign, enforcement and camera monitoring continue throughout the school year.

The RCS Central School District uses stop-arm cameras capable of capturing traffic violations across six to seven lanes of roadway.

These cameras provide valuable evidence to help identify drivers who put children at risk.

According to NEWS10, an estimated 50,000 vehicles illegally pass stopped school buses across New York State every day.

🛑 RED LIGHTS FLASHING & STOP-ARM EXTENDED? YOU MUST STOP!

New York law requires motorists to stop for a school bus displaying flashing red lights, including:

✅ Drivers approaching from behind.

✅ Drivers traveling toward the bus from the opposite direction.

✅ Drivers on multilane roadways.

✅ Drivers on divided highways, even when a median separates opposing traffic.

🚗 Motorists must stop at least 20 feet from the bus and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or the bus driver or a police officer signals that it is safe to proceed.

⚠️ Passing a stopped school bus can result in significant fines, points on your license and other penalties.

Whether you're traveling along Route 9W, Route 144, Route 32, Delaware Avenue or neighborhood roads throughout Delmar, Glenmont, Selkirk, Ravena and Coeymans, school bus safety is everyone's responsibility.

Children can be unpredictable, and a moment of impatience behind the wheel can change a family's life forever.

⏰ Running late is never an excuse.

📱 Put down the phone.

🚸 Watch for children approaching or leaving buses.

🛑 When those red lights flash, STOP!

Our school bus drivers, transportation staff and law enforcement officers work hard to protect students every day.

But they cannot do it alone.

Every driver has a responsibility to help ensure that children arrive at school and return home safely.

🚌 Have you witnessed a driver illegally passing a stopped school bus in Bethlehem or RCS?

🚸 Do you think stop-arm cameras and increased enforcement are making a difference?

👇 Share your thoughts respectfully in the comments, and please help spread this important safety reminder!

Indian Ladder Farms Cidery & Brewery is celebrating New York's craft brewing community with its Fresh Hop Festival, happening Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026!

It's also an opportunity to recognize the farmers who grow New York's hops and the craft brewers who transform those ingredients into distinctive seasonal beverages.

From local agriculture to small-business creativity, the event highlights the connection between New York farms and the state's growing craft beverage industry.
