An invasive insect that has spread rapidly through parts of New York is moving closer to home — and there’s a direct Bethlehem/RCS connection residents should know about.

The spotted lanternfly has become increasingly common in parts of the Hudson Valley. In Catskill, just over 18 miles from the Bethlehem-RCS area, residents who rarely or never encountered the insects a few years ago are now reporting them in much greater numbers.

And according to state agriculture officials cited by the Times Union, isolated populations have already been identified in Albany and Rensselaer counties — including around the Port of Albany and Selkirk rail facilities.

Spotted lanternflies don't travel especially long distances on their own. Their real superpower is hitchhiking.

Adults and their egg masses can be transported on vehicles, rail cars, equipment and cargo — making major transportation and freight corridors particularly important pathways for their spread.

That's especially relevant locally because Selkirk is home to a major rail hub, while the Port of Albany sits immediately north of Bethlehem.

These insects aren't considered a threat to people or pets, but they can become a serious nuisance and feed on a wide variety of plants.

They especially favor the invasive tree of heaven, but they can also feed on grapevines and numerous other plants. Large concentrations can stress vegetation, and vineyards are particularly concerned because heavy feeding can affect grape production and quality.

That means homeowners, gardeners, farmers and anyone maintaining property around Bethlehem, Selkirk, Ravena, Coeymans and New Scotland may want to become familiar with what spotted lanternflies and their egg masses look like.

The Capital Region hasn't experienced the massive concentrations seen farther south — at least not yet. But with established pockets nearby and transportation corridors providing an easy way for the insects to move, experts believe their presence around Albany could become much more noticeable.

Interestingly, communities that have dealt with lanternflies for several years have sometimes experienced a boom-and-bust pattern: populations surge dramatically for several years and later decline as environmental pressures begin catching up with them.

Still, preventing their spread remains important.

📸 If you spot one locally, take a photo and note the location. New York officials track spotted lanternfly populations to better understand where the invasive species is becoming established.

And yes — when appropriate, squashing spotted lanternflies is encouraged as one way residents can help control them. 🥾🪰

The key is spotting that exclamation point. In math, 4! means 4 factorial — not simply 4.

4! = 24

So our problem becomes:

33 ÷ 11 × 24

Under PEMDAS, multiplication does not automatically come before division. When both appear, work from left to right.

33 ÷ 11 = 3

Now:

3 × 24 = 72

💡 The teaching moment:
Factorials are handled before ordinary multiplication and division. Then remember that multiplication and division are equals in the order of operations, so solve them from left to right.

A common mistake would be treating 4! as 4. That would give 12 — but that little ! changes everything!
