PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR PROPOSED BATTERY STORAGE PROJECT AT PLUG POWER CAMPUS

🔋⚡ PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR PROPOSED BATTERY STORAGE PROJECT AT PLUG POWER CAMPUS 🏛️🚒

A proposed 4.5-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Plug Power campus in Slingerlands is moving to the public-comment stage, with the New Scotland Planning Board scheduling a public hearing for Tuesday, October 6.

The Planning Board voted 3-1 on September 1 to schedule the hearing.

📍 WHAT'S BEING PROPOSED?

Adaptive Infrastructure Partners (AIP) is proposing three battery enclosures, each rated at 1.5 megawatts, behind Plug Power at Vista Technology Park.

According to the project materials, the battery equipment would occupy less than one acre within a seven-acre lease area on a 10.76-acre parcel. The facility would be automated, unstaffed and remotely monitored.

⚡ WHY IS THE BATTERY PROJECT BEING PROPOSED?

According to the application, the project is connected to reliability concerns involving National Grid's New Krumkill substation, which is approaching capacity.

A long-term rebuild of the substation is anticipated to be completed in 2030. In the meantime, National Grid sought a non-wires alternative, or NWA, to provide temporary load relief and improve reliability.

The battery system could help support the electrical grid during circumstances such as high-demand heat waves, storm-related problems and substation work.

🚒 FIRE SAFETY IS A MAJOR PART OF THE REVIEW

Project materials outline several proposed safety measures being developed with the Slingerlands Fire Department, including:

  • At least 10 feet between battery containers

  • A 15-foot non-vegetative stone buffer outside the BESS fence

  • Thermal cameras and gas detectors

  • Integration of the battery system's fire alarm with Plug Power's existing systems

  • Specialized firefighter training before commercial operation and annually thereafter

  • Development of an emergency-operations plan

  • An $80,000 payment to the Slingerlands Fire Department by the end of 2027 for fire-suppression equipment

The draft emergency-response information also addresses the particular hazards associated with lithium-ion battery fires, including extreme temperatures, potentially flammable or toxic gases and the possibility of reignition.

💧 GROUNDWATER IS ALSO PART OF THE DISCUSSION

According to AIP's environmental materials, the property is located over a principal aquifer, and the estimated water table is approximately five feet below ground.

Emergency-response materials acknowledge that leaking coolant or battery electrolyte could potentially contaminate soil or water, making environmental safeguards another issue likely to receive attention during the review.

🗣️ PUBLIC HEARING: OCTOBER 6

The hearing will give residents an opportunity to learn more about the proposal and provide comments as the Planning Board considers the application.

The Planning Board could also impose additional conditions as part of any eventual project approval.

📣 WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Do you support a battery energy storage facility at an industrial/technology campus like Vista Technology Park, or do you still have concerns about fire safety, groundwater, emergency response or other potential impacts?

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IN BETHLEHEM: LOCAL RESIDENTS TAKE THEIR MESSAGE TO THE ROADSIDE

📣🇺🇸 CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IN BETHLEHEM: LOCAL RESIDENTS TAKE THEIR MESSAGE TO THE ROADSIDE

A couple of days ago, we came across two “young & active” local women spending some of their time along a Bethlehem-area roadway engaging the community on an issue they care deeply about.

The women were holding signs expressing their concerns about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), immigration enforcement and detention policies.

Whatever one’s position on this highly debated issue, peaceful civic and public engagement is one way residents participate in community life and make their views known. 🇺🇸

And their efforts certainly weren’t going unnoticed while we were there. 🚗📣 We observed a number of passing motorists honking their horns and waving as the women stood alongside the road sharing their message.

Their public engagement comes amid broader discussion and concern surrounding immigration enforcement and ICE activity across the Capital Region.

📸 Making a difference can take many forms. Sometimes it’s simply showing up, participating in the civic process and speaking publicly about the issues that matter to you.

👇 We welcome respectful conversation from all viewpoints. Please keep the discussion civil, thoughtful and focused on the issue.

SUNDAY MORNING

MATH PUZZLER SOLVED!

🧠☕ SUNDAY MORNING MATH PUZZLER! ☀️➗

Today’s challenge is:

70 + 70 ÷ 7 = ?

The key is remembering PEMDAS, the order of operations:

P – Parentheses
E – Exponents
M/D – Multiplication & Division
A/S – Addition & Subtraction

✏️ Step-by-Step Solution

We do NOT add 70 + 70 first because division comes before addition.

Step 1: Do the division

70 ÷ 7 = 10

Now the expression becomes:

70 + 10

Step 2: Add

70 + 10 = 80

🎯 FINAL ANSWER: 80

⚠️ Common mistake:
Someone might calculate 70 + 70 = 140, then divide by 7 and get 20. But that changes the original expression because there are no parentheses telling us to add first.

So if you answered 80, you nailed it! 🎉🧠👏

How did you do on this Sunday Morning Math Puzzler? Drop your answer below — and no peeking at the comments first! 😄👇
