WILTON, NY — Powerful thunderstorms swept through parts of the Capital Region Thursday evening, leaving widespread tree damage, downed power lines and thousands without electricity in Saratoga County.

The National Weather Service is expected to investigate damage in the Town of Wilton after witnesses reported seeing what appeared to be a funnel cloud during the storms. As of early Friday morning, a tornado had not yet been officially confirmed.

🌳 Trees and power lines were reported down throughout portions of Saratoga County.

⚡ More than 5,000 customers reportedly lost power Thursday evening, with roughly 3,000 still without electricity around 6 a.m. Friday.

🌪️ A tornado warning was issued for part of Saratoga County around 6 p.m. as the strongest storms moved through.

🚗 Storm damage also affected the Northway near Exit 16, where fallen trees and debris created hazardous driving conditions.

Wilton may be roughly 50 miles north of the Town of Bethlehem, but Thursday's storms are an important reminder that severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, flash flooding and even tornadoes can occur throughout the Capital Region.

For families in Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands, Selkirk, New Scotland, Voorheesville and the RCS communities, this is a good opportunity to make sure severe-weather plans are ready before the next warning appears on your phone.

Keep phones charged, enable emergency weather alerts, know where you'll shelter in your home, and never approach a downed power line. If a tornado warning is issued, move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.

The National Weather Service's damage survey should help determine whether Thursday's destruction in Wilton was caused by a tornado or powerful straight-line winds.

A growing U.S.–Canada trade dispute is raising new questions about energy costs in New York, and this story has a particularly interesting connection to the Town of Bethlehem.

As tensions between the two countries escalate, officials in northern New York are expressing concern about the state's reliance on electricity imported from Canada — and what could happen to wholesale electricity prices if Canadian energy exports were reduced or became more expensive.

⚡ Here’s what we know:

🔹 According to New York's electric grid operator, about 22% of the electricity New York imports comes from Canada.

🔹 Grid officials say they still expect electricity demand to be met even if cross-border tensions continue.

🔹 The bigger potential concern may be price rather than supply. Reduced or more expensive Canadian electricity could put upward pressure on wholesale energy prices.

🔹 The issue comes shortly after completion of the approximately $6 billion, 339-mile Champlain Hudson Power Express, which brings Canadian hydropower from Quebec to New York City.

This isn't simply an issue hundreds of miles away at the Canadian border.

The Champlain Hudson Power Express actually passes through the Town of Bethlehem on its way to New York City. The massive transmission project is designed to provide roughly 20% of New York City's electricity needs.

That makes Bethlehem part of one of the most significant new energy corridors connecting Canada and New York.

Potentially — but there are several steps between an international trade dispute and what ultimately appears on a local household's electric bill.

Wholesale electricity prices are influenced by supply, demand, fuel costs, transmission constraints and other market conditions. If Canadian electricity became more expensive or less available, it could contribute to higher wholesale prices, which can eventually affect consumers.

That doesn't mean Bethlehem residents should expect an immediate increase because of the trade dispute. But it does mean that what happens between Washington and Ottawa could eventually have consequences much closer to home.

And there's a larger question worth watching:

🤔 As New York becomes increasingly interconnected with Canadian hydropower, how much should the state depend on electricity supplied across an international border?

The new transmission line provides New York with access to large amounts of hydropower, but the current trade dispute is also highlighting how energy policy, international relations and household utility costs can become interconnected.

For Bethlehem residents, that's what makes this more than a North Country story.

⚡ A major piece of the Canada-to-New York energy network runs directly through our town.

Another sewer repair is scheduled in the Town of Bethlehem, and residents who live on or travel along Winne Road will want to know about this one.

The Town of Bethlehem Department of Public Works is scheduled to make repairs to the sanitary sewer collection system near 79 Winne Road on Friday, August 28.

The key is remembering PEMDAS, especially that multiplication comes before addition and subtraction.

Step 1 — Do the multiplication first:
6 × 3 = 18

Now the problem becomes:

5 + 18 − 2

Step 2 — Addition and subtraction have equal priority, so work from LEFT to RIGHT:
5 + 18 = 23

Step 3:
23 − 2 = 21

A common mistake is solving straight across from the beginning:

5 + 6 = 11
11 × 3 = 33
33 − 2 = 31 ❌

That ignores the order of operations.

E — Exponents
M/D — Multiplication & Division, left to right
A/S — Addition & Subtraction, left to right
