⚡🏢 NEW YORK MOVES TO HIT THE PAUSE BUTTON ON DATA CENTERS! 🏢⚡
A major development is unfolding in New York's growing debate over large-scale data centers.
On Thursday night, the New York State Legislature passed a bill that would place a one-year moratorium on new data center permits statewide, giving lawmakers time to develop regulations addressing energy use, water consumption, community impacts, labor standards, and efficiency requirements.
📝 The measure now heads to Governor Kathy Hochul's desk for consideration.
Supporters say the pause is needed to ensure New York develops responsible safeguards before more large-scale facilities are approved.

👷 Labor Standards
🌎 Environmental Concerns
Those opposing the moratorium argue that local communities should make their own decisions and warn that New York could lose economic development opportunities and technology investments to other states.
📊 According to the New York Independent System Operator, there are currently 24 proposed data center projects under review statewide, representing more than 9,000 megawatts of potential power demand.
🏘️ Here in our region, many residents have been closely following the proposed data center project at the former Kenwood Convent property near Albany and the Bethlehem town line.
State Senator Patricia Fahy said residents have raised significant questions about the proposal.
🗣️ "The community has felt a bit caught off guard," Fahy said. "Residents are rightfully asking difficult questions. Who benefits? Who bears the cost? How do we protect ratepayers and our natural resources?"
Meanwhile, some municipalities aren't waiting for state action.
📍 The Town of Perth recently approved its own moratorium on data centers, citing concerns about future energy demand and local control.
The issue has become one of the most discussed development topics in New York as communities balance economic opportunities with concerns over infrastructure, power grids, water supplies, and quality of life.
💬 What do you think? Should New York pause new data center development while regulations are developed, or should local communities decide on a case-by-case basis?

🚔⚖️ WALMART THEFT SUSPECT WHO DROVE ONTO ELM AVE PARK SOCCER FIELDS SENTENCED TO PRISON ⚖️🚔
A Troy woman who led police on a chase through Glenmont and onto active soccer fields at Elm Avenue Park has been sentenced to state prison.
Albany County District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon announced that 49-year-old April Mahoney has been sentenced to 2½ to 5 years in state prison after pleading guilty to Burglary in the Third Degree, covering multiple retail theft incidents in Bethlehem and Colonie.
Mahoney was also sentenced to one year in local jail for Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree related to the incident at Elm Avenue Park. That sentence will run concurrently with her prison term.
📅 The incident occurred on September 16, 2025, when Bethlehem Police responded to reports of an active theft at the Walmart on Route 9W in Glenmont.
According to police:
🛒 Three suspects were seen leaving the store in a Ford Escape SUV
🚓 Officers attempted a traffic stop
💨 The vehicle fled south on Route 9W
⚠️ The chase continued onto Feura Bush Road
⚽ The SUV then left the roadway, drove down an embankment, and entered the soccer fields at Elm Avenue Park while youth games were underway
🌳 Mahoney and two passengers later abandoned the vehicle and fled into a wooded area before being apprehended by police.
Investigators also recovered evidence connecting the suspects to multiple thefts from businesses throughout Bethlehem.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Anthony Huntley of the Financial Crimes Bureau.
💬 Many local families will remember the concern this incident caused as youth soccer games were taking place at the park at the time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

🕯️💙 STORIES OF SURVIVAL, COURAGE & HOPE HONORED IN THE CAPITAL REGION 💙🕯️

🕯️💙 STORIES OF SURVIVAL, COURAGE & HOPE HONORED IN THE CAPITAL REGION 💙🕯️
As the number of living Holocaust survivors continues to decline, preserving their stories has never been more important.
On International Holocaust Survivors Day, Observed on June 4th, 2026 the Jewish Family Services of Northeastern New York honored local survivors and shared powerful firsthand accounts of resilience, perseverance, and hope.
One of those survivors, Ivan Vamos, was just 5 years old when he and his mother struggled to survive Nazi persecution in Budapest, Hungary during World War II.
💔 After his father was taken away in a forced labor unit, Ivan and his mother were forced to live under false identities to avoid detection.
🍄 They survived by foraging for mushrooms, gathering firewood, and finding whatever food they could.
😟 They hid in air raid shelters, constantly fearful that their true identities would be discovered.
🏠 Later, they sought refuge in one of the "protective houses" established through the efforts of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who helped save thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust.
When German forces arrived with attack dogs and weapons, Ivan and his mother narrowly escaped after briefly being separated.
🏃♀️🏃 They fled into downtown Budapest and survived in bombed-out buildings until the war finally ended.
🇺🇸 After the war, Ivan and his mother immigrated to the United States, where he has dedicated himself to sharing his story with students and future generations.
🕯️ His message serves as a powerful reminder of why Holocaust education and remembrance remain so important.
As survivors age, their voices become even more precious. Their stories help ensure that the lessons of history are never forgotten and that future generations understand the consequences of hatred, intolerance, and indifference.
💙 Today, we honor Holocaust survivors everywhere and thank them for their courage in sharing their experiences.

💰🏛️ RECORD $384.8 MILLION SPENT LOBBYING NEW YORK STATE IN 2025! 🏛️💰

💰🏛️ RECORD $384.8 MILLION SPENT LOBBYING NEW YORK STATE IN 2025! 🏛️💰
Special interest groups spent a record-breaking $384.8 million lobbying New York State government in 2025, according to a newly released report from the Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (COELIG).
📈 It marks the fourth consecutive year of record lobbying spending in New York.
Lobbying is the practice of organizations, businesses, and advocacy groups hiring professionals to influence legislation, regulations, and government policy.
Among the biggest spenders in 2025:
💵 Coalition for New York's Future — $3.6 million
🎰 Genting New York LLC — $3.47 million
🎲 Queens Future — $3.2 million
🏥 Greater New York Hospital Association — $3.1 million
🥤 American Beverage Association — Nearly $3.1 million
The report found that the gaming and housing industries led lobbying expenditures across the state.
🏢 The most-lobbied government entity was the Governor's Office, which received 4,464 lobbying filings during the year.
The report also uncovered:
⚠️ $23.47 million in reporting discrepancies
⚠️ Five unregistered lobbyists
⚠️ More than $864,000 in unreported advertising and event expenses
And the spending isn't slowing down...
📊 During just January and February of 2026, organizations spent $77.6 million on lobbying, an increase of nearly 19% compared to the same period last year.
Supporters of lobbying say it helps businesses, industries, labor groups, nonprofits, and advocacy organizations have a voice in government.
Critics argue that large organizations with deep pockets can exert disproportionate influence compared to everyday citizens.
💬 What do you think? Does lobbying help lawmakers make informed decisions, or has the amount of money involved become too influential in state government?
