Bethlehem Central is preparing for several important leadership transitions for the upcoming 2026-27 school year β including a principal swap between Elsmere and Slingerlands Elementary Schools. π
Beginning this fall:
π Andrew Baker will become principal of Elsmere Elementary

π Kate Kloss will serve as principal of Slingerlands Elementary
District leaders say the transition is designed to bring fresh perspectives, strengthen collaboration between schools, and continue building on the success already happening across BC elementary schools. π€β¨
In addition, BCHS Principal Dave Doemel will officially step into his new role as principal of Eagle Elementary School beginning July 1. π¦
Superintendent Jody Monroe praised both leaders for their experience and dedication to Bethlehem students and families.
π£οΈ Monroe shared that both Baker and Kloss are respected longtime educators whose leadership styles and commitment to academics, character, community, and wellness will continue to strengthen their school communities.
π Baker has led Slingerlands Elementary since 2021 and is already familiar with Elsmere, having previously served there as interim principal during the 2017-18 school year.
π Kloss has served as principal at Elsmere since 2003 and is currently the districtβs longest-serving building leader. π
Over the next several months, Elsmere, Slingerlands, and Eagle Elementary will host opportunities for students, staff, and families to meet and connect with their incoming principals. β€οΈπ«

A growing debate is unfolding in New York over so-called βsurveillance pricingβ β the use of personal consumer data and algorithms to adjust prices online and in stores. ππ
Two proposed bills moving through the State Legislature aim to stop companies from using your shopping habits, location data, browsing history, and other personal information to potentially charge different prices to different customers.
Supporters say the legislation is about:
β Consumer protection
β Transparency
β Preventing unfair price increases
β Stopping companies from exploiting personal data
The bills are backed by:
βοΈ New York Attorney General Letitia James
π΅ AARP
π€ Labor groups and consumer advocates
The proposed laws would also target the use of electronic shelf labels β digital price tags that can instantly change pricing in stores. πͺπ»
But business groups and major companies are warning the bills could unintentionally eliminate personalized discounts and loyalty offers that many consumers currently benefit from.
β οΈ Industry leaders say examples that could potentially be impacted include:
π Food delivery app discounts
π¨ Hotel loyalty programs
ποΈ Online marketplace promotions
π Location-based deals
π Special offers for returning users
The New York Business Council says the legislationβs wording may be too broad and could block businesses from offering legitimate lower prices tailored to shoppersβ interests or habits. Lawmakers say they are continuing to negotiate amendments to the bill while keeping the main focus on fairness and affordability for consumers.
ποΈ One bill has already passed the State Senate and now awaits action in the Assembly.
π² What do YOU think? Should New York ban algorithm-based βsurveillance pricingβ β or could it end up hurting consumers looking for discounts and personalized deals? Leave your comments belowπ
