🚤🌊 NEW FLOATING DOCKS INSTALLED AT BETHLEHEM BOAT LAUNCH! 🎣☀️

Boaters, anglers, and Hudson River visitors have something exciting to celebrate in Bethlehem! 👏

Two brand-new floating docks were officially installed Thursday at the Bethlehem Boat Launch located at Henry Hudson Park along the beautiful Hudson River shoreline just in time for the Memorial Day Weekend🚤🌅

The upgraded docks were specially designed with:
Floating access for changing river levels
Center safety rails
Self-supporting construction
No in-water anchoring system

Local officials say the improvements will make launching boats, fishing, and enjoying the river easier and safer for the community. 🎣🛶

Bethlehem Parks & Recreation leaders highlighted how important the new docks are for handling fluctuating Hudson River water levels while improving recreational access for residents and visitors alike.

The nearly $296,000 project was funded through New York State’s New York Works Program, which helps repair and improve environmental and recreational infrastructure across the state. 🌿

Officials from the DEC called the Bethlehem launch one of the premier boating access points along the Hudson River and praised the collaboration between the Town of Bethlehem, Albany County, and New York State that helped make the project possible. 👏

Another great investment in outdoor recreation and community access right here in Bethlehem! ❤️🌊

🏘️⚖️ BETHLEHEM ZONING DEBATE HEATS UP OVER HOUSING DENSITY PROPOSALS 🚦🏡

A major debate over the future of development in Bethlehem unfolded during the Town Board’s May 13 meeting as officials publicly reviewed proposed zoning code amendments more than two years in the making. Residents packed the meeting and voiced strong concerns over traffic, neighborhood character, school crowding, and increased housing density. 👥

At the center of the discussion is a proposal to rezone certain Residential “A” neighborhoods to “Low Density Residential” — a change that would actually increase allowable housing density from three units per acre to seven units per acre. Proposed conservation subdivisions could also include three-story buildings and limit single-family homes to just one-third of the development. 🏘️📈

Town officials say the changes are intended to align Bethlehem’s zoning laws with the Town’s 2022 Comprehensive Plan, which focuses on creating more diverse and affordable housing opportunities. But not all board members agreed on how — or where — that growth should happen.

💬 Board member David DeCancio challenged several assumptions presented during the meeting, particularly surrounding affordability and infrastructure impacts. He questioned whether recent apartment developments in Glenmont are truly affordable and raised concerns about increased traffic along already congested roads like Feura Bush Road and Route 9W.

🚍 DeCancio suggested areas such as the former Shop-Rite/Vista Boulevard site and Delaware Avenue as better locations for multi-unit housing because they already have access to shopping, trails, and public transportation.

⚡ Other board members pushed back, raising concerns about environmental impacts, infrastructure strain, and whether higher-density housing is what residents truly want for Bethlehem’s future.

Residents who spoke during public comment overwhelmingly opposed increasing density in Glenmont neighborhoods, citing:
🚗 Traffic congestion
🏫 School overcrowding
🌳 Loss of neighborhood character
🏘️ Concerns over suburban sprawl

Several residents warned they do not want Bethlehem to become “another Clifton Park or Colonie,” expressing fears that rapid development could permanently change the community.

📊 Town officials are now expected to gather additional information on traffic impacts, infrastructure costs, housing demand, and development already in the pipeline before continuing discussions.

The proposed amendments also address topics including:
🏠 Accessory dwelling units
🏡 Short-term rentals
🌿 Landscaping and design standards
📐 Compatibility with existing neighborhoods

This debate is likely far from over as Bethlehem residents continue weighing the balance between housing growth, affordability, infrastructure, and preserving community character.

🚗 GAS PRICES COULD SPIKE AGAIN NEXT WEEK, ANALYST WARNS ⚠️🌍

Just as millions of Americans prepare to hit the road for Memorial Day weekend, experts say gas prices could soon surge again depending on escalating tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. ⛽📈

GasBuddy petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan warned Wednesday that fuel prices may jump sharply next week if international negotiations fail to reopen the critical global shipping route. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit chokepoints, and disruptions there are already sending shockwaves through energy markets. 🌎🛢️

While some temporary relief at the pump could arrive over the holiday weekend as gas stations cycle through existing inventory, analysts say the situation remains extremely volatile. 😬

🚙 AAA expects a record 3.91 million travelers to drive during Memorial Day weekend, with the national average gas price currently sitting at:
⛽ $4.56 per gallon
⬆️ Up 3 cents from last week
⬆️ Up $1.38 from last Memorial Day weekend

De Haan described the situation as potentially “the most volatile summer at the pump in years,” warning Americans could pay billions more in fuel costs this summer — even if tensions ease soon. 💸

The uncertainty comes as President Trump says negotiations with Iran are ongoing, though no final agreement has yet been reached. Energy markets continue reacting to every development involving the conflict and possible shipping disruptions in the Middle East. 🌍⚠️

For local families planning summer vacations, road trips, boating weekends, and holiday travel, experts recommend:
Filling up earlier in the week when possible
Using fuel price tracking apps
Planning routes carefully
Preparing for continued price swings throughout the summer

Will gas prices calm down — or are bigger spikes coming? 👀
