If you're carrying a credit-card balance, shopping for a car, or using a home-equity line of credit, Wednesday's Federal Reserve decision is worth watching.

The Federal Reserve voted unanimously on September 16 to raise its benchmark federal funds rate by 0.25 percentage point, bringing the target range to 3.75%–4.00%. It was the first Fed rate increase since 2023. The Fed said inflation remains elevated and that the increase is intended to help move inflation back toward its 2% objective.

So what could that mean here in Bethlehem, Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands and Selkirk?

💳 Credit cards: Many cards carry variable interest rates, so borrowing costs can move higher following increases in benchmark rates. For anyone carrying a balance month to month, even a relatively small rate increase can mean paying more interest.

🚗 Auto loans: Rates on new car financing aren't determined solely by the Fed, but higher short-term rates can contribute to more expensive financing — particularly important for families preparing to replace a vehicle.

🏠 Home-equity lines: HELOCs commonly have variable rates, making them among the borrowing products that can react more directly to Fed policy changes.

🏡 30-year mortgages are different. They don't simply rise by the same amount as the federal funds rate. Longer-term mortgage rates are influenced heavily by Treasury yields, inflation expectations and broader financial-market conditions. WNYT's local financial expert therefore cautioned that Wednesday's decision doesn't necessarily translate into an immediate comparable increase in 30-year mortgage rates.

The Fed's latest move is ultimately a balancing act: policymakers are trying to bring inflation down while maintaining employment and economic activity. The Fed reported that economic activity continues to expand at a solid pace while inflation remains elevated.

For local households, perhaps the most immediate takeaway is simple: borrowing money remains expensive, and carrying high-interest credit-card debt could become a little more costly.

This one is all about remembering PEMDAS — and especially what happens when division and multiplication appear together. 👀

PEMDAS tells us:

P — Parentheses
E — Exponents
M/D — Multiplication & Division, left to right
A/S — Addition & Subtraction, left to right

There are no parentheses or exponents, so we move to division and multiplication.

We have:

21 ÷ 3 × 2

First:

21 ÷ 3 = 7

Then:

7 × 2 = 14

So our original problem becomes:

24 − 14

24 − 14 = 10

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE: Some people may multiply 3 × 2 = 6 first and then calculate 21 ÷ 6. That's incorrect because multiplication does not automatically come before division.

👉 Multiplication and division have equal priority, so you solve them from LEFT TO RIGHT.
