🦋🚨 MONARCH BUTTERFLIES IN DANGER! FEDERAL PROTECTIONS DELAYED UNTIL 2030 — CAN WE SAVE THEM? 🌿🌎
BETHLEHEM, NY — One of nature's most beautiful and recognizable butterflies is facing a serious fight for survival, and conservationists say time is running out.
The familiar orange-and-black monarch butterfly, which visits gardens, fields and natural areas throughout Bethlehem, Voorheesville, RCS and the Capital Region, is experiencing a troubling population decline.
⚠️ A DISTURBING WARNING FROM SCIENTISTS
According to a recent Times Union report, a 2024 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service assessment estimated:
🦋 Eastern monarchs: 61% probability of extinction within 60 years.
🦋 Western monarchs: 99% probability of extinction within 60 years.
The eastern population, which includes monarchs seen here in New York, migrates thousands of miles to spend the winter in Mexico.
During the 1990s, eastern monarchs occupied between 14 and 45 acres of their Mexican wintering grounds. Last winter, that figure was approximately 7 acres.
🏛️ FEDERAL PROTECTIONS DELAYED UNTIL 2030
Conservation organizations have sought Endangered Species Act protections for monarchs since 2014.
Although federal officials proposed listing the species as threatened in December 2024, a final decision did not arrive in 2025.
Following additional legal action, the Trump administration's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agreed to a new deadline of June 6, 2030, for a final listing decision.
Conservation groups welcome having an enforceable deadline but warn that waiting several more years could put additional pressure on an already vulnerable species.
Importantly, the agreement establishes a deadline for a decision — it does not guarantee that monarchs will receive threatened status.
🌎 WHAT'S THREATENING THE MONARCHS?
Scientists and conservationists identify several major challenges:
🌿 Loss of milkweed and natural habitat
🚫 Pesticides and herbicides
🌡️ Climate change, drought and extreme weather
🌳 Damage to wintering forests in Mexico
🥑 Expansion of avocado cultivation near monarch wintering habitats, adding pressure to forests and water resources
Monarchs also play an important role as pollinators, supporting healthy ecosystems and biodiversity.
🌱 NEW YORK TAKES ACTION!
In December 2025, Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation directing New York State to advance monarch conservation efforts.
The initiative emphasizes protecting habitat, restoring milkweed and supporting conservation on public and private lands.
Closer to home, the Albany Pine Bush Preserve provides important habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
🦋💚 WHAT CAN BETHLEHEM AREA RESIDENTS DO?
While federal protections remain unresolved, local residents can take meaningful action!
🌱 Plant native milkweed! Monarch caterpillars depend on milkweed for food.
🌸 Grow native wildflowers! Asters, goldenrod and other nectar-producing plants help fuel their migration.
🚫 Reduce pesticide use! Protect butterflies, caterpillars and other beneficial insects.
🏡 Create backyard habitat! Even a small pollinator garden can help.
🤝 Encourage community planting! Schools, churches, parks, businesses and neighborhood groups can all participate.
❤️ OUR COMMUNITY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Imagine what could happen if hundreds of families across Bethlehem, Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands, Selkirk, Voorheesville and RCS planted milkweed and created pollinator-friendly gardens next spring!
Sometimes protecting nature begins right outside our own front doors. 🦋🌻
💬 WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
🦋 Have you noticed fewer monarch butterflies in recent years?
🌱 Do you have milkweed or a butterfly garden?
🌸 Would you consider planting native flowers to help bring monarchs back?

🦋🌸 SAVE OUR MONARCHS! HOW BETHLEHEM AREA RESIDENTS CAN HELP BRING THESE BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES BACK! 🌿💚
BETHLEHEM, NY — One of nature's most recognizable butterflies is facing an uncertain future, but residents of Bethlehem, Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands, Selkirk, Voorheesville and RCS can make a real difference — starting in their own backyards! 🏡🦋
⚠️ MONARCH BUTTERFLIES ARE IN TROUBLE!
According to a recent Times Union report, the federal government has agreed to make a final decision on Endangered Species Act protections for monarch butterflies by June 6, 2030, following years of legal challenges and conservation efforts.
The situation is serious.
🦋 Federal researchers estimate the eastern monarch population, which migrates through New York and winters in Mexico, faces a 61% probability of extinction within the next 60 years.
🌎 Monarchs once covered as much as 45 acres of their Mexican wintering grounds. Last winter, they occupied only about 7 acres.
Habitat loss, pesticides, climate change and disappearing milkweed are among the major threats.
🌱 HERE'S HOW OUR BETHLEHEM AREA COMMUNITY CAN HELP!
The good news? YOU DON'T NEED A FARM OR A LARGE PROPERTY TO HELP SAVE MONARCHS!
Even a small backyard garden can make a difference.
🌿 1. PLANT NATIVE MILKWEED!
Milkweed is essential to monarch survival because it's the only type of plant monarch caterpillars can eat!
Consider planting locally appropriate native varieties, including:
🌱 Common Milkweed
🌸 Swamp Milkweed
🌼 Butterfly Weed
These plants provide places for monarchs to lay eggs and food for their caterpillars.
🌻 2. CREATE A BUTTERFLY-FRIENDLY GARDEN!
Plant native nectar-producing flowers that bloom from spring through fall.
Great options for our area include:
🌸 Native asters
🌼 Goldenrod
🌺 Purple coneflower
🌻 Black-eyed Susans
Late-season flowers are especially valuable as monarchs prepare for their long migration south!
🚫 3. REDUCE PESTICIDES AND HERBICIDES!
Avoid spraying milkweed and flowering plants with insecticides.
Consider reducing chemical lawn treatments and allowing designated areas of your yard to grow naturally.
Every pesticide-free patch of habitat helps! 💚
🏡 4. TURN A SMALL CORNER OF YOUR YARD INTO MONARCH HABITAT!
You don't need acres of land!
A sunny garden bed, native flower patch or small meadow can provide valuable food and shelter.
Leave some natural habitat standing through the winter to benefit other pollinators, too.
🦋 5. GET THE WHOLE COMMUNITY INVOLVED!
Encourage schools, neighborhood associations, churches, businesses and community organizations to plant native milkweed and pollinator gardens.
Imagine the impact if hundreds of Bethlehem-area households each created a small monarch-friendly space! 🌎❤️
🌳 NEW YORK IS TAKING ACTION!
In December 2025, Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation directing the state to develop conservation measures for monarch butterflies.
The effort emphasizes restoring milkweed, protecting habitat and encouraging conservation on public and private lands.
Locally, the Albany Pine Bush Preserve provides habitat for monarchs and other important pollinators.
🦋 SMALL ACTIONS CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!
Monarch butterflies travel thousands of miles during their extraordinary migration.
But their future may depend partly on what we do right here in our own neighborhoods.
One milkweed plant. One pollinator garden. One community working together. 🌱💚
