Big news for Slingerlands and everyone who has fond memories of the iconic Toll Gate Restaurant & Ice Cream! ❤️

After years of wondering what the future might hold for one of Bethlehem's most recognizable landmarks, the former Toll Gate property has officially changed hands.

According to the Albany Business Review, the property was purchased for $700,000 by three local friends, who are now exploring options for redeveloping or leasing the site.

👀 What does this mean?

At this point:
✅ The property has been sold.
✅ New ownership is in place.
✅ Future possibilities are being explored.

🚫 However, there has been no announcement that Toll Gate Ice Cream itself is reopening, nor has a specific redevelopment plan been publicly unveiled.

For many residents, Toll Gate wasn't just an ice cream shop—it was part of growing up in Bethlehem. From summer evenings and family traditions to first jobs and first dates, the beloved destination holds a special place in the hearts of generations.

As many of you noticed over the past week, activity around the building—including lights on and people working inside—sparked plenty of speculation. Now we know why: the property officially has new owners.

A debate over the future of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is drawing attention across New York, as federal funding changes could have a significant impact on local governments and families who rely on food assistance.

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer visited Unity House in Troy this week to advocate for delaying a planned shift in SNAP funding responsibilities from the federal government to states and counties. The proposed change is currently scheduled to take effect in October 2027 as part of the next federal Farm Bill.

If the funding shift moves forward as planned:

🥫 New York counties would be responsible for covering a larger share of SNAP costs.
💰 Local officials warn counties could face difficult budget decisions, including raising taxes or reducing other services.
📍 In the Capital Region, more than 103,000 residents receive SNAP benefits, with approximately $250 million in annual assistance flowing into local communities.

Albany County is expected to face the largest increase in local costs, with neighboring counties also projected to see significant financial impacts.

Increased local Costs to Albany County would be passed down to Bethlehem Residents in the form of higher taxes along with increase pressure on our local food pantries due to fewer local residents in need receiving SNAP Benefits!

Leaders from regional food assistance organizations say demand has been climbing steadily over the past year.

🍎 Food pantries are reporting longer lines.
👨‍👩‍👧 More working families are seeking assistance.
👵 Older adults have also been affected by recent eligibility changes.

The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York says its network of nearly 1,000 food pantries and community meal programs is experiencing record demand and warns that charitable organizations cannot fully replace federally funded nutrition programs.

Congress is currently working on a new Farm Bill, and lawmakers continue to debate whether to delay or modify the proposed funding changes before they take effect.

The outcome could have lasting effects on county budgets, food assistance programs, and thousands of households throughout the Capital Region.

If you're driving through road construction in New York State this summer, slow down and stay alert! 🚗💨

The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) is expanding its Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Program, meaning speed cameras could soon appear in nearly any state-managed work zone, not just on select highways.

🚧 Previously, the program was limited to certain controlled-access highways. Thanks to changes included in the latest state budget, DOT can now deploy the cameras in work zones across much more of the state's road network.

State officials say the goal is simple:

👷 Protect highway workers
🦺 Improve safety in construction zones
🚗 Encourage drivers to slow down where crews are working

Since the program launched in 2023, officials report that average speeds in camera-monitored work zones have dropped significantly, helping create safer conditions for both workers and motorists.

📸 More than 700,000 speeding violations have been issued since the program began.

🚙 State officials note that less than 2% of vehicles traveling through monitored work zones have received tickets, suggesting that most drivers are obeying the posted speed limits.

Great news for pedestrians, families, and neighbors in Bethlehem! 👏

If you've driven along Feura Bush Road recently, you've probably noticed some major progress! Our latest video shows the new sidewalk taking shape between Elsmere Avenue and Hasgate Drive/Murray Avenue as this long-awaited safety improvement moves closer to completion.

🚧 This project has been years in the making, with planning stretching back several years. Construction was delayed due to challenges involving property rights-of-way and the need to safely cross an existing drainage ditch, but it's exciting to finally see the project becoming a reality.

🚶 Once completed, the new sidewalk will:
✅ Improve pedestrian safety
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Provide a safer route for families, walkers, and runners
🏡 Enhance connectivity throughout the neighborhood
🚸 Create a more accessible corridor for residents traveling along Feura Bush Road
