Bethlehem is planting the seeds for a more sustainable future! 🌱 More than 60 farmers, scientists, educators, conservation professionals, and local residents gathered at Heath Farm in Glenmont on August 4 for the New York State Soil Health Field Day—an educational event that showcased innovative farming practices designed to improve soil, strengthen local agriculture, and build climate resilience.

Originally expecting around 20 attendees, organizers were thrilled by the overwhelming turnout, highlighting the growing community interest in sustainable farming and environmental stewardship.

Visitors explored hands-on demonstrations showing how cover crops can:
🌻 Improve soil structure
💧 Help retain water during heavy rain
🌱 Capture nutrients naturally
🐝 Support pollinators
🌿 Reduce weeds
🌎 Increase resilience during both floods and droughts

A two-acre demonstration plot featured a diverse mix of plants including sorghum-sudan grass, sunflowers, and legumes recommended through Cornell research.

One popular demonstration showed how different soil types respond to heavy rainfall—illustrating how healthy soil can reduce runoff, erosion, and flooding.

The lessons weren't just for farmers.

Organizers emphasized that homeowners can also use many of these same practices in backyard gardens to improve soil health, reduce maintenance, conserve water, and create healthier landscapes.

Attendees also toured the pilot market garden operated by Lucky Cat Farm, where participants learned firsthand about both the successes and challenges of sustainable farming at Heath Farm.

The Cornell Soil Health Trailer provided interactive demonstrations that allowed visitors to better understand how healthy soil functions beneath our feet.

The event marks another milestone in the Town of Bethlehem's long-term vision for the 308-acre Heath Farm, purchased by the Town in 2022 to preserve farmland while creating opportunities for:

📚 Education
🔬 Research
🌿 Conservation
🤝 Community engagement

Recent improvements include stabilization of the historic barn, installation of a new working garage door, water service restoration through a state grant, and continued planning for a future agricultural education center.

As summer continues, visitors driving by Heath Farm will soon see colorful sunflowers blooming throughout the demonstration fields.

It's another exciting example of how Bethlehem is investing today in a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come. 🌻

A man already facing multiple fraud-related charges across the Capital Region is now facing additional felony charges in Bethlehem following an investigation into an alleged forged check that was cashed in Glenmont.

According to Bethlehem Police, the new charges stem from an incident on July 17, when investigators allege a forged personal check belonging to a Glenville resident was cashed at a Broadview branch in Glenmont for more than $2,100.

Because the transaction occurred in Bethlehem, police charged the suspect with:
🔹 Grand Larceny (Felony)
🔹 Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument (Felony)

The defendant was arraigned and returned to the Albany County Correctional Facility while the case proceeds through the court system.

The new charges follow arrests made in July after Bethlehem Police responded to reports of individuals allegedly attempting to cash fraudulent checks at multiple Capital Region bank branches.

Investigators say officers located two suspects near a Delaware Avenue bank and conducted an investigation that ultimately led to additional evidence being recovered from a vehicle pursuant to a search warrant. Authorities reported finding cash, multiple cell phones, and numerous altered ("washed") checks.

The investigation resulted in numerous felony and misdemeanor charges across several jurisdictions, including Bethlehem and Colonie.

Financial crimes like check fraud can affect anyone—from local residents to businesses and financial institutions. Cases involving stolen or altered checks often cross municipal boundaries, making cooperation among local police departments especially important.

Bethlehem Police continue to encourage residents to:
✅ Monitor bank accounts regularly.
✅ Report suspicious banking activity immediately.
✅ Secure personal checks and financial information.
✅ Be alert to mail theft and identity fraud.

⚖️ As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

These planned training sessions help first responders practice emergency response procedures in a realistic school environment, ensuring they're prepared to protect students, staff, and the community should an emergency ever occur.
