🌳🕊️ HEARTBREAKING UPDATE: YOUNG TREE WORKER HAS PASSED AWAY 🕊️🌳

It is with great sadness that we share an update to a story that touched many throughout our community.

Ryan James Slover, 22, of Guilderland, passed away on Friday, July 24, following the serious workplace accident that occurred in Delmar on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

Ryan was part of a tree crew working behind the Delmar Pointe housing development when he was struck by a falling tree. Emergency responders from Delmar-Bethlehem EMS, the Delmar Fire Department, and the Bethlehem Police Department responded quickly to the scene. Firefighters completed a difficult rescue, carrying Ryan from a location deep within a ravine before he was transported to Albany Medical Center for emergency care.

Despite the dedicated efforts of the medical team at Albany Medical Center, Ryan later succumbed to his injuries.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, July 31, followed by a celebration of Ryan's life with family and friends.

In Ryan's memory, his family has requested that those wishing to honor him consider making a memorial donation to the National Eczema Association or the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America in lieu of flowers.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Ryan's family, friends, coworkers, and everyone who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.

We also extend our gratitude to the first responders and medical professionals whose swift actions and compassionate care gave Ryan every possible chance.

A piece of Capital Region history is coming to an end.

The Doane Stuart School in Rensselaer has announced it will permanently close, with operations ending on September 1, 2026, after serving students and families for five decades.

Founded in 1975 through the merger of Kenwood Academy and St. Agnes School, Doane Stuart became known for its independent, interfaith approach to education and graduated thousands of students who have gone on to careers in business, education, healthcare, public service, and countless other fields.

School leaders cited years of declining enrollment as the primary reason behind the difficult decision to close.

While the campus is located across the river, many Bethlehem-area families have attended Doane Stuart over the years, and the school's alumni include residents from Bethlehem, Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands, Selkirk, Voorheesville, and the RCS community. For many, the school represents lifelong friendships, cherished traditions, dedicated teachers, and an education that helped shape their futures.

The closing marks the end of an institution that has been part of the educational landscape of the Capital Region for generations.

A special evening of worship and contemporary Christian music is coming this September—and it has strong ties to our local community.

St. Matthew's Church in Voorheesville is helping present "Voices to God," featuring acclaimed Christian artists Josh Baldwin and David Leonard, on Saturday, September 19, from 7:00–9:00 p.m. at Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs.

This event is the result of a partnership between Peggy McQuade of St. Matthew's Church and Capital Region native, former LPGA champion, and CBS Sports broadcaster Dottie Pepper, who have been working together to bring more contemporary Christian music to our region.

For many families throughout Bethlehem, Voorheesville, New Scotland, Delmar, Glenmont, Selkirk, and the surrounding communities, opportunities to experience nationally known Christian artists close to home have been limited. This concert gives local residents the chance to enjoy an evening of worship, music, prayer, and encouragement—without traveling far from the Capital Region.

Whether you're a longtime fan of contemporary Christian music or simply looking for an uplifting night out, this promises to be a meaningful event featuring two respected artists whose songs have inspired churches and listeners across the country.

The devastating flooding that struck Ravena and Coeymans continues to have a major impact on local families, businesses, and public infrastructure—and efforts are now underway to secure federal assistance for the recovery.

Congressman Paul Tonko recently toured some of the hardest-hit areas alongside local officials to see the damage firsthand. During the visit, he met with residents whose homes suffered significant flood damage, viewed damaged roads and public infrastructure, and discussed the need for federal funding to help communities rebuild.

Among the damage reported:
🏠 Homes left uninhabitable after floodwaters swept through.
⚡ Utilities shut off at several properties because of extensive damage.
🚑 Flooded roadways that affected emergency response efforts.
🚧 Damage to roads, sewer lines, and aging infrastructure requiring major repairs.

Local leaders also raised ongoing concerns about aging water and sewer systems and the need for long-term infrastructure improvements to better withstand future storms.

Although the most severe damage occurred in Ravena and Coeymans, the same storm system also caused flooding across Bethlehem, Delmar, Glenmont, Selkirk, Slingerlands, and New Scotland. Many local roads were closed, homes experienced flooded basements, and emergency crews responded to numerous storm-related incidents.

These events serve as another reminder that extreme weather is affecting communities throughout the Capital Region, making investments in flood mitigation, drainage improvements, and resilient infrastructure increasingly important for everyone.

❤️ Our thoughts remain with the families still recovering from this historic storm, and we thank the volunteer firefighters, EMS personnel, highway crews, utility workers, and emergency responders who have worked tirelessly to keep our communities safe.
