Just when motorists are feeling the pinch from rising gas prices, another increase is heading their way!

New York State Thruway tolls are scheduled to increase by 5% on January 1, 2027, adding another expense for drivers traveling across the Empire State.

The increase is part of a toll adjustment plan approved by the New York State Thruway Authority in September 2023, which also included a 5% increase that took effect in 2024.

💵 WHAT WILL IT COST DRIVERS?

Here's how the upcoming increase will affect some common trips originating in Albany:

🚙 Albany to Syracuse
Current toll: $6.03
January 2027: $6.34

🚙 Albany to Buffalo
Current toll: $12.78
January 2027: $13.41

⚠️ Motorists using an out-of-state E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail can expect to pay more than drivers with a New York E-ZPass.

🏗️ WHY ARE TOLLS INCREASING?

Thruway officials point to the growing costs of maintaining and modernizing the aging highway system.

🔹 Approximately 85% of the Thruway's roadway base dates back to its original construction in the 1950s.

🔹 Roughly 75% of its bridges are more than 60 years old.

🔹 Officials previously identified approximately $470 million in infrastructure needs beyond their existing 2022–2026 capital program.

The Thruway Authority maintains that toll revenue is essential for roadway safety, repairs and long-term improvements.

🚛 TRUCKERS FEELING THE PRESSURE TOO

The trucking industry is already dealing with higher fuel costs and other operating expenses.

While the Trucking Association of New York recognizes the need for infrastructure investment, industry representatives have also called for relief from other state transportation-related taxes.

📅 MARK YOUR CALENDAR: JANUARY 1, 2027

For Bethlehem, Delmar, Glenmont, Ravena and other Capital Region motorists who regularly use I-87 and I-90, the higher tolls will soon become another part of the cost of traveling.

💬 WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Are the toll increases justified by the need to maintain New York's aging highways, or are drivers already paying enough?

99% FAILED! CAN YOU GET IT RIGHT?

Today's challenge looks simple, but there's a mathematical twist that could trip up even the best problem solvers!

Hint: The ! is a factorial, NOT punctuation!

Let's break it down step by step.

In mathematics, an exclamation mark represents a factorial.

A factorial means multiplying a positive whole number by every positive whole number below it, down to 1.

For example:

\[ 3!=3\times2\times1=\boxed{6} \]

So our original equation becomes:

\[ 300+300\div6 \]

Remember:

We must divide before adding!

\[ 300\div6=50 \]

Now our equation becomes:

\[ 300+50=\boxed{350} \]

FINAL ANSWER

\(300+\frac{300}{3!}=300+\frac{300}{6}=350\)

Some people might answer 400 because they treat the exclamation mark as punctuation rather than a factorial.

Others might answer 200 by adding 300 + 300 first and then dividing by 3.

Both are incorrect when ! represents a factorial.

The key lesson: Recognize mathematical symbols and always follow the correct order of operations!

💬 Did you get 350 on your first try?

👍 Give yourself a thumbs-up if you solved it correctly!
