If your sunrise looked a little hazy over Delmar, Glenmont, Selkirk, Slingerlands, Elsmere, or North Bethlehem this morning, you're not imagining it. 🌫️

Wildfire smoke from Canada and the Midwest is making its way into the Capital Region today, creating hazy skies and reducing air quality across our area.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC):

🌫️ The Capital Region is expected to experience an Air Quality Index (AQI) around 97, which falls into the "Moderate" category.

For most healthy people, today's air quality should not cause significant issues. However, those with asthma, heart or lung conditions, young children, and older adults may notice irritation or discomfort if spending extended time outdoors.

The haze is being carried into New York by changing wind patterns from active wildfires burning across Ontario and Minnesota. Canada currently has hundreds of active wildfires, with smoke traveling hundreds of miles into the Northeast.

After several hot and humid days, today's high temperature is expected to reach around 89°, but a passing cold front should lower humidity levels, making it feel more comfortable than earlier this week.

🚶 If you're taking an early morning walk around the neighborhood or heading out on the Rail Trail, be aware of the smoky conditions.
😷 If you have asthma or other respiratory conditions, consider limiting prolonged outdoor activity.
🚰 Stay hydrated, especially with the lingering summer heat.
🏡 Keep windows closed if the smoke becomes more noticeable in your area.
📱 Monitor local weather and air quality updates if conditions change throughout the day.

While today's smoke is not expected to reach the levels we experienced during last summer's wildfire events, you may notice hazier skies and reduced visibility throughout the day.

Excitement is building in North Bethlehem as the community gets closer to welcoming a brand-new playground designed with inclusion, accessibility, and family fun at its heart! 🎉

Construction is in its final stages on the ADA-accessible playground at North Bethlehem Park, and the transformation is incredible. Soon, children of all abilities will have a place where they can play side-by-side, build friendships, and create lasting memories together.

This exciting new park has been thoughtfully designed to provide:

♿ ADA-accessible play equipment
🛝 Inclusive features that encourage children of all abilities to play together
❤️ A welcoming environment for children with disabilities and their families
🌳 A community gathering place where everyone belongs

For many local families, especially those raising children with physical, developmental, or sensory disabilities, this playground represents much more than new equipment—it represents opportunity, independence, inclusion, and joy.

Every child deserves the chance to laugh, explore, and play without barriers.

Construction is expected to be completed later this month (July 2026).

Until then:

🚧 The playground area remains fenced off.
🚫 North Bethlehem Park is temporarily closed while crews complete the final safety inspections and finishing touches.

We know families throughout North Bethlehem, Slingerlands, Delmar, Glenmont, Selkirk, and beyond are eager to visit, but a little more patience now will help ensure the playground is safe and ready for everyone to enjoy.

When people think of Bethlehem, they often don't think about hunger. But the reality is that food insecurity exists right here in our community—and it's affecting more of our neighbors than many realize.

That's where Patty's Place is stepping in with compassion, dignity, and a mission to help.

Founded by Jen and Pat Moore as a tribute to their late mothers, both named Patty, this local nonprofit is focused on supporting residents—especially seniors—who may be struggling to put healthy food on the table.

❤️ Pat, a longtime Bethlehem paramedic with more than 40 years of service, wanted to continue giving back after retirement. Together with Jen, an experienced registered nurse and former EMT, they created Patty's Place to help meet a growing need in the community.

Patty's Place is designed to feel more like a neighborhood market than a traditional food pantry.

Visitors can browse shelves filled with:
🍎 Fresh fruits and vegetables
🥚 Fresh eggs
🥫 Pantry staples
🥕 Healthy food choices

The goal is to provide nutritious food while preserving dignity and independence, particularly for older adults living on fixed incomes.

🏡 Marie Rose Manor – North Bethlehem (Slingerlands)
📅 Thursdays
Fresh food is delivered to residents of the senior housing community, providing both nutritious groceries and valuable social connections.

🏡 Bethlehem Grange – Selkirk
📅 Wednesdays
🕒 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Residents can shop from dozens of shelves stocked with nonperishable foods along with baskets of fresh produce.

Approximately 100 local seniors benefit from Patty's Place each week.

Patty's Place thrives thanks to volunteers, local farms, businesses, and generous community donations.

Among those helping make the program possible are:
🥕 Stanton Farms with fresh produce
🥚 Local farm donations of eggs
🚗 Hoffman's Car Wash
🤝 Bethlehem Food Pantry
❤️ A recent anonymous $5,000 donation from a Selkirk resident

Community leaders say food insecurity isn't always visible.

Many residents—including seniors, families facing unexpected financial hardships, and those dealing with rising living costs—may quietly struggle to afford groceries.

Programs like Patty's Place help ensure neighbors have access to healthy food while maintaining privacy and dignity.

As Bethlehem continues to grow, organizations like Patty's Place will play an increasingly important role in keeping our community healthy and connected.
