Talk about a math-tastic achievement! 🎉👏
Three outstanding second-grade students from Glenmont Elementary School recently proved that big accomplishments can come from some of the youngest learners!
On Saturday, June 13, Oliver Ducharme, Breanna Liang, and Zephyra Messer earned an incredible 2nd Place finish in New York State at the First in Math State Tournament, held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. 🌟
Even more impressive? Only 10 second-grade teams from across New York State qualified for the prestigious competition! 🏅
The trio advanced to the state tournament after capturing a regional championship in March and represented Glenmont with excellence as they competed against some of the state's top young math minds.
➕➖✖️➗ First in Math is designed to strengthen:
🧠 Mental math skills
📚 Fact fluency
🎯 Problem solving
💡 Conceptual understanding
🏆 Confidence in mathematics
At the state tournament, students competed offline using game cards and were challenged to demonstrate their understanding of math concepts in a live group setting.
🌟 This achievement continues a strong tradition of success for Glenmont Elementary. In fact, Breanna and Zephyra were also members of a regional championship team that advanced to states as first graders in 2025!
🏆 For winning the regional tournament, the students earned trophies, while Glenmont Elementary received a commemorative plaque and a $1,000 prize.
👏 Congratulations to Oliver, Breanna, Zephyra, their families, teachers, and Principal Laura Heffernan on this outstanding accomplishment!
These young mathematicians are proving that the future is bright in Bethlehem! 🎉🦅

🎓❤️ FROM SLINGERLANDS TO GRADUATION: CLASS OF 2026 RETURNS HOME! ❤️🎓
There were smiles, applause, and plenty of memories in the halls of Slingerlands Elementary School on June 11 as members of the Bethlehem Central High School Class of 2026 returned to where their educational journey began. 🏫✨
The annual Senior Assembly welcomed graduating seniors back to their former elementary school for a heartfelt celebration of growth, friendship, and achievement.
🎶 The event began with the Class of 2026 joining current Slingerlands students in a special performance of "Rainbow Connection," accompanied by music teacher Sarah Platek on piano, creating a memorable and emotional start to the ceremony.
👏 Principal Andrew Baker welcomed the seniors and their families before former teachers Mr. Betor, Mrs. Leach, Ms. Qualtere, Mrs. Ward, and Mr. Romero introduced each graduate and shared their exciting plans for the future.
🎤 Senior speakers Simon Annastas and Lil-Marie Suich offered words of encouragement and reflection to current students, staff, and families.

💡 Lil-Marie reminded students that success isn't about being perfect—it's about always doing your best, learning from experiences, and continuing to grow.
❤️ Simon shared the importance of kindness and friendship, noting that many of the relationships he formed at Slingerlands Elementary remain some of the most important connections in his life today. He even joked that one of his goals was to make his grandmother cry happy tears!
🌟 As these seniors prepare to graduate and embark on their next adventures, their visit served as a powerful reminder of the teachers, friendships, and experiences that helped shape them into the young adults they are today.
Congratulations to the BCHS Class of 2026 as they prepare to turn the page to an exciting new chapter! 🎉🎓

Congratulations to the incredible A.W. Becker Elementary School Wackadoodle Running Club, who recently crossed the finish line at the 16th Annual Sara Lee Delightful Kids Run in Albany! 👏🏅
For the previous seven weeks, 20 students in grades 3, 4, and 5 have been putting in the work—arriving early to school twice a week to train for the event and prepare for race day.
💪 Along the way, they learned:
🏃 Proper running and pacing techniques
🤸 Stretching and injury prevention
🧠 Mental toughness and perseverance
🎯 Goal setting and determination
On race day, all that hard work paid off as the Wackadoodles proudly participated in the 1-Mile and 3K Kids Runs, joining hundreds of young runners from across the Capital Region.
❤️ The Wackadoodle Running Club has a special history at A.W. Becker. The program was originally founded by longtime RCS Physical Education teacher Cheryl Morenz, who created the club to help students discover the joy, confidence, and discipline that come from running. Today, the tradition continues strong!
👏 This year's Wackadoodles were led by Mr. Herwick and Miss McClave, who encouraged, coached, and cheered on their runners every step of the way.
🎽 A special thank you also goes to the AWB PTA for sponsoring the club t-shirts and to Karen Waddingham for creating them!
🌟 Whether they crossed the finish line first or last, every student who participated demonstrated commitment, courage, and determination—and that's something worth celebrating.
🏁 Congratulations, Wackadoodles! You represented A.W. Becker and the RCS community with pride!

Tuesday Morning Math Puzzler

🧠 Tuesday Math Twizzler Solution!
The problem is:
7 + 3 × 4 = ?
Many people answer 40 because they add first:
❌ (7 + 3) × 4 = 10 × 4 = 40
But that's not how math works unless there are parentheses.
✅ Follow the Order of Operations
Remember PEMDAS:
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication & Division (left to right)
Addition & Subtraction (left to right)
Since there are no parentheses or exponents, we do the multiplication first:
3 × 4 = 12
Now the problem becomes:
7 + 12 = 19
🎉 Correct Answer: 19
📚 Easy Way to Remember
Think of multiplication as having "VIP access" before addition.
So:
7 + 3 × 4
⬇️
7 + 12
⬇️
19
✅ Final Answer: 19
💬 How many of you got 19 on your first try? Be honest! 😄
