VOORHEESVILLE, NY — Right here in our own backyard, just minutes from Bethlehem, Delmar, Slingerlands and Voorheesville, sits one of the Capital Region's most remarkable natural treasures — John Boyd Thacher State Park! 🌳
Most of us know Thacher Park for its breathtaking views, beautiful hiking trails, waterfalls and spectacular fall foliage. 🍁
BUT DID YOU KNOW THE ROCKS BENEATH OUR FEET HOLD FOSSILS APPROXIMATELY 400 MILLION YEARS OLD? 😲🐚
That's right! Long before Bethlehem, Voorheesville or even the dinosaurs existed, this entire area was part of a warm, shallow sea filled with ancient marine life!
And today, families from our communities can discover evidence of that prehistoric world simply by looking closely at the rocks along the park's trails and scenic overlooks.
No digging required! 🔍
🌊 WAIT… OUR COMMUNITY WAS ONCE UNDERWATER?
Millions of years ago, much of what is now Albany County was covered by a warm, shallow sea!
Today, the limestone cliffs of the Helderberg Escarpment preserve evidence of that ancient underwater world.
🔍 Look closely at exposed rocks and you may discover:
🐚 Brachiopods — ancient marine animals with shells resembling clams
🪸 Fossilized Corals — remnants of ancient reef ecosystems
🪨 Ancient Rock Formations — layers revealing millions of years of Earth's geological history
The cliffs contain 14 distinct rock formations, representing approximately 63 million years of geological history!
📸 A FOSSIL HUNT THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN ENJOY!
One of the easiest places to begin exploring is near the park's scenic Overlook, where fossils can be spotted in exposed stone surfaces.
Bring along a magnifying glass, camera, comfortable walking shoes and a little curiosity!
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Fossil collecting is prohibited in New York State Parks. Visitors may observe and photograph fossils, but they must remain where they are found.
