VOORHEESVILLE/NEW SCOTLAND — A major expansion of free school meals is making a noticeable difference at Voorheesville Central School District, where participation in breakfast and lunch surged during the 2025–26 school year.

Under New York's Universal School Meals program, students can receive breakfast and lunch at no cost, with the program supported through state and federal funding.

And Voorheesville students are taking advantage of it! 🙌

🍳 Breakfasts served: 46,588 — up from 10,241, an increase of 355%

🥪 Lunches served: 114,101 — up from 81,183, an increase of 41%

🍎 Total increase: 69,265 additional meals served compared with the previous school year.

The biggest change came at the secondary campus, where the number of breakfasts served jumped 475%. Elementary breakfasts increased 238%, while elementary lunches increased 33%.

There was encouraging financial news as well. According to information presented to the Board of Education, the food-service program finished the year with an operating surplus of approximately $8,500, compared with an operating loss of about $3,500 the previous year.

The school board's August update also provided a snapshot of several other issues affecting Voorheesville families.

📚 Attendance: Districtwide daily attendance remained strong at approximately 95.5% during 2025–26. School officials identified tardiness, particularly at the high school, as a greater concern than overall absences.

📵 Cell phones: During the first year of New York's bell-to-bell school cellphone restrictions, VCSD recorded 146 violations among grades 6–12, involving 101 students. No violations were reported in grades K–5.

💰 School taxes: The voter-approved $36.6 million 2026–27 budget carries an approximately 4.18% increase in the tax levy. District examples show the actual dollar increase will vary depending on municipality, assessments and equalization rates.

🍎 But perhaps the biggest takeaway is happening in the cafeteria: thousands more breakfasts and lunches are reaching Voorheesville students without families having to pay at the register.

For families, that's one less daily expense to worry about — and for students, it means greater access to meals throughout the school day. ❤️

DELMAR — A difficult and unexpected move for 45 residents of the Albany Center for Independent Living brought out an extraordinary response from the Bethlehem community.

Residents at the Rockefeller Road facility were scheduled to be relocated after the Town of Bethlehem issued an emergency order closing the building because of multiple code violations and reported unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

Many of the residents learned they would be moving with very little time to prepare. But when the community learned they needed suitcases to pack their belongings with dignity, Bethlehem responded — quickly. ❤️

🧳 An initial request for luggage received help from the Delmar Progress Club, First United Methodist Church and Albany International Airport.

When another request went out for approximately 40–50 additional medium and large suitcases, neighbors and community members began bringing donations to Bethlehem Town Hall.

In less than 24 hours, more than 100 suitcases were donated. 🙌

The luggage meant residents could pack their clothing and personal possessions into proper bags rather than having to rely on garbage bags during an already stressful transition.

Meanwhile, staff from Bethlehem Senior Services, Bethlehem Police and the New York State Department of Health have been assisting residents as they relocate to other facilities. The town's Building Division has also been involved extensively in addressing the conditions that led to the emergency closure.

The situation surrounding the facility remains deeply troubling, but the response from the community is something worth recognizing.

❤️ When neighbors needed help, Bethlehem showed up.

To everyone who donated a suitcase, collected luggage from friends and neighbors, helped coordinate the response or assisted these residents through an unexpected move — THANK YOU.

ALTAMONT — The sights, sounds and flavors of Scotland filled the Altamont Fairgrounds on Saturday as the Capital District Scottish Games returned for another incredible celebration of Scottish culture and tradition! 🏴❤️

We had the opportunity to attend this year's Games, and there was plenty to see, hear — and eat! From the unmistakable sound of bagpipes echoing across the fairgrounds to Highland competitions, live music and crowds enjoying the festivities, there was something happening everywhere you turned.

🥁 One of the highlights was the piping and drumming competition, with bagpipers and bands showcasing their talents throughout the day. It's one thing to hear a single bagpipe — it's something entirely different to experience the sound of pipes and drums filling the fairgrounds!

💪 The traditional Highland Games were another crowd favorite, with competitors putting their strength and skill to the test in events including the caber toss, hammer throw, stone throw and Weight Over Bar.

And you definitely didn't want to arrive hungry! 😋

There was plenty of food to enjoy, including traditional Scottish favorites, pastries and festival fare. Vendors and artisans also filled the grounds with clothing, jewelry, leather goods and plenty of Scottish merchandise.

🎶 Live music added to the atmosphere, while traditional dancing and other demonstrations helped turn the day into much more than a sporting competition — it was a full celebration of Scottish heritage, music, food and community.

🍂 With Altamont just a short drive from Bethlehem, New Scotland and Voorheesville, it was great seeing another large regional event bringing families and visitors together for a day of fun.

📸 And judging by all the activity Saturday, Scottish pride was alive and VERY well in Altamont!

A big thank-you to the organizers, competitors, musicians, vendors, volunteers and everyone else who helped make the 2026 Capital District Scottish Games such an enjoyable community event. 👏🏴

NEW SCOTLAND — A legal dispute connected to the restoration of the historic Hilton Barn is continuing, with the Town of New Scotland now asking a judge to declare the project's contractor in default.

According to reporting by The Altamont Enterprise, the town filed a motion in Albany County Supreme Court on Aug. 21 seeking a default judgment against Sanz, the contractor involved in the barn restoration project.

The latest action stems from a lawsuit filed by a Sanz employee who alleges he was seriously injured after falling from scaffolding while working on the Hilton Barn restoration in July 2024.

The worker sued the Town of New Scotland in 2025, alleging negligence and violations of New York Labor Law. The town subsequently brought a third-party claim against Sanz, seeking to have the contractor provide a legal defense and indemnification under provisions of the construction contract and insurance requirements.

⚖️ So what is the town asking the court to do now?

The town says Sanz has not formally responded to its third-party complaint, appeared in the case or retained an attorney despite acknowledging receipt of the legal papers. The town is therefore asking the judge to find the contractor in default.

Importantly, the requested ruling would not determine whether the Town of New Scotland is legally responsible for the worker's injuries. Rather, it could strengthen the town's effort to hold Sanz responsible for defense costs and other obligations under the construction agreement.

Court filings say the worker suffered significant injuries after falling approximately five to eight feet while moving from a ladder to scaffolding. He alleges the equipment was unsecured and positioned on uneven, sloping ground. His injuries reportedly required surgery and later additional treatment following complications.

🏚️ The case adds another chapter to the story of the 125-year-old Hilton Barn, which New Scotland relocated and restored rather than allowing it to be demolished. The community barn officially opened this summer with the goal of becoming a long-term public gathering space.

For New Scotland taxpayers, the court battle is worth watching because the central issue now involves who ultimately bears the legal and financial responsibilities associated with the construction accident.

The case remains pending, and the allegations concerning the accident have not been adjudicated.

There are no parentheses or exponents, so we move to division and multiplication.

⚠️ Here's the important rule: Multiplication does NOT automatically come before division. They have equal priority, so we work from LEFT TO RIGHT.

45 ÷ 5 = 9

Now our expression becomes:

45 + 9 × 2

9 × 2 = 18

Now we have:

45 + 18

45 + 18 = 63

Someone might add the two 45s first:

45 + 45 = 90 ❌

But addition has to wait until the multiplication and division are completed.
