For months, Bethlehem residents have been showing up, asking questions, submitting comments and voicing concerns about the Town's proposed zoning changes.

Now, that public participation is having a very real impact on the direction of the plan.

At the Sept. 23 Bethlehem Town Board meeting, Town Supervisor David VanLuven announced a major change in direction: the Town will retain its existing Residential A (RA) and Residential B (RB) zoning districts, rather than moving forward with the proposed replacement residential classifications.

The previously proposed Low Density Residential (LDR) and more recently discussed Neighborhood Residential (NR) classifications will not move forward as proposed.

The Town is also returning to its current conservation subdivision rules rather than proceeding with the proposed changes to those regulations.

🏡 RESIDENTS SPOKE — TOWN LEADERS LISTENED

Throughout the zoning review, residents have repeatedly raised questions and concerns involving:

🚗 Traffic and congestion
🏘️ Housing density
🚰 Infrastructure capacity
🌳 Open-space preservation
🏗️ Future development
🏡 Conservation subdivisions
📍 The character of existing neighborhoods

Residents attended community meetings and Town Board meetings, contacted officials and Planning Department staff, and continued participating as different versions of the proposal were discussed.

The Town itself acknowledged earlier this summer that community feedback was influencing the process, announcing a pause in the zoning review to give the Town Board additional time to reconsider major portions of the proposal.

And now we're seeing another significant change.

🇺🇸 THIS IS WHAT LOCAL DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE

Whether residents agreed or disagreed on every detail, people became involved in an issue affecting the future of their community.

They showed up.

They asked questions.

They expressed concerns.

Town officials listened.

And the proposal changed.

That is an important part of representative local government: residents participating in the process and elected officials responding to what they hear. 👏

📋 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Planning Director Robert Leslie has been directed to prepare revised language reflecting the change in direction for presentation at the Oct. 14 Town Board meeting.

The broader zoning update isn't necessarily finished. Other portions that have generated less controversy may continue moving forward, and board members have indicated additional changes could still be considered.

So the details of the next written proposal will matter.

But after months of meetings, questions, emails, public comments and community debate, Bethlehem residents can point to something concrete:

📣 Their participation helped shape the conversation — and the Town Board changed course.

That's community involvement.

That's representative government.

The Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Varsity Girls Volleyball Team got back on track Monday, snapping a three-match losing streak with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Averill Park! 🎉🏐

The Ravens had to battle for every set, with Averill Park reaching at least 19 points in all four frames.

The Voorheesville Varsity Girls Soccer Team continues to build momentum, picking up its fifth consecutive victory with a 3-0 shutout over Unatego on Friday! 👏⚽️

The Blackbirds entered the matchup riding a four-game winning streak and delivered another strong all-around performance, with the defense keeping the Spartans off the scoreboard.

The problem is:

6 + 5 × 5

The key is remembering PEMDAS / Order of Operations. Multiplication comes before addition.

5 × 5 = 25

Now the expression becomes:

6 + 25

6 + 25 = 31

A common mistake is to work strictly from left to right:

❌ 6 + 5 = 11
❌ 11 × 5 = 55

But multiplication has priority over addition, so 55 is incorrect.

Remember: Multiplication and division before addition and subtraction.
