Judith “Judy” Avner of Delmar, who died following a rollover crash in Albany last week, is being remembered for nearly two decades of leadership and advocacy on behalf of New Yorkers affected by brain injuries.

Avner, 74, was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday near Krumkill Road and Bender Avenue.

🚨 WHAT POLICE SAY

Albany Police responded to the crash at approximately 11 a.m. According to the preliminary investigation, the vehicle was traveling east on Route 85 when the 76-year-old driver lost control while attempting to take the Krumkill Road exit.

The vehicle left the roadway and rolled over onto Bender Avenue.

Both Avner and the driver were found unresponsive with serious traumatic injuries. Albany firefighters and emergency medical personnel provided treatment at the scene before both were transported to Albany Medical Center.

Avner was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver’s injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

Police continue to investigate what caused the driver to lose control.

❤️ REMEMBERING JUDY AVNER

Following news of her death, the Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS) shared a tribute recognizing Avner’s many years of service to the organization and the people it supports.

Avner served as Executive Director of BIANYS for 19 years before retiring in 2014.

During her tenure, she became a dedicated advocate for individuals living with brain injuries and their families. The organization credited her leadership, determination, compassion and commitment with helping strengthen both BIANYS and the broader brain injury community throughout New York State.

Her influence continued well beyond her years as executive director, with the organization saying her contributions will remain an important part of its history and legacy.

BIANYS extended its condolences to Avner’s family and loved ones while expressing gratitude for the many years she devoted to serving others.

The hint says the answer is NOT 80 — and that little ! is the key. 🔑

The symbol ! means factorial.

So:

5! = 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 120

Our expression becomes:

55 + 5 × 120

Multiplication comes before addition:

5 × 120 = 600

Now we have:

55 + 600

55 + 600 = 655

A common mistake is to overlook the factorial symbol and calculate:

55 + 5 × 5 = 80 ❌

But 5! does NOT mean 5. It means multiply every positive whole number from 5 down to 1.

So the correct calculation is:

55 + 5 × (5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1) = 655 ✅
