A Delmar adult living facility has been ordered to vacate after a Town of Bethlehem investigation identified numerous building and safety code violations, while state health officials continue investigating complaints about conditions inside the facility.

The Albany Center for Independent Living (ACIL), located at 141 Rockefeller Road, was served with an order Thursday requiring the facility to be vacated by 5:00 PM Friday, September 4. According to the report, approximately 45 residents are affected.

Town officials say the closure followed multiple visits to the property after concerns were raised in August involving an out-of-service elevator, a meal that reportedly was not served as expected, and conditions within the building.

🔎 WHAT TOWN OFFICIALS FOUND

According to Bethlehem officials, the violations included roof leaks and water damage affecting resident rooms, concerns about possible mold, materials stored in stairwells and near electrical panels, hydraulic fluid leaking from the elevator, problems involving a previously repaired gas leak in the kitchen, and other fire, property-maintenance and town code issues.

Officials determined that while some violations might appear relatively minor individually, the combination of problems made the building unsafe for residents to remain there.

The facility will reportedly not be permitted to reopen until its owners submit an acceptable compliance plan and correct the violations. Town officials indicated that process could take at least a month, depending on the repairs required.

❤️ FOCUS NOW TURNS TO THE RESIDENTS

The Town of Bethlehem, its Senior Services Department and the New York State Department of Health are working together to relocate residents safely to other facilities with available space.

Town officials have emphasized that residents will not simply be left without housing. If alternative accommodations have not been secured for every resident by the deadline, officials indicated those individuals could remain temporarily while suitable housing is arranged.

The sudden move is nevertheless a significant disruption for residents, some of whom have lived at the facility for years.

⚠️ STATE INVESTIGATION ALSO UNDERWAY

The State Department of Health began investigating the facility earlier this week after complaints were filed by Bethlehem officials regarding living conditions.

Those complaints included reports involving hot water, toilet paper, meals, roof leaks, pests and cleanliness in the kitchen. Some of the residents' accounts were disputed or described differently by facility administration, according to the report, and the state investigation remains ongoing.

The facility also has a history of regulatory issues. State records cited in the report show 77 violations during 30 inspections between April 2022 and March 2026. Earlier this year, the operator also agreed to a civil penalty stemming from violations identified during a 2025 inspection.

🏘️ WHY THIS MATTERS TO BETHLEHEM

This isn't simply a building-code story. Forty-five members of our community are being uprooted from their homes, many with limited housing options and varying levels of need.

The immediate priority is ensuring every resident is moved safely, treated with dignity and provided with appropriate accommodations while regulators determine what happens next.

BCSD will offer a FREE Parents as Partners webinar series, featuring 10 live Zoom sessions designed to give parents and caregivers practical strategies for supporting children, learning and overall family wellness.

The series is led primarily by Dr. Jennifer L. Bashant, founder of Building Better Futures, LLC, with several guest presenters joining throughout the year.

The key is knowing PEMDAS — and recognizing what that little ! means!

The exclamation point means factorial.

5! = 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 120

So our problem becomes:

42 ÷ 6 × 120

Multiplication and division have the same priority, so when both appear, work from LEFT to RIGHT.

First:

42 ÷ 6 = 7

Then:

7 × 120 = 840

🚨 THE TRICK: A common mistake is treating 5! as simply 5. That exclamation point completely changes the problem — 5! equals 120, not 5.

So if you got 840, give yourself a Friday-morning victory! 🏆🧠
