A little extra money could soon be arriving in the mail for thousands of eligible households across Bethlehem and the Capital Region.
New York State says one-time energy rebate checks of up to $200 will begin going out September 21, with checks continuing to be mailed through December. About 8.2 million New York households are expected to receive payments through the $1 billion Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate (POWER) program, which was approved as part of the state budget.
For eligible residents in Delmar, Slingerlands, Glenmont, Selkirk and throughout the Bethlehem area, here's what the payment could look like:
💰 $200 — Married/joint filers with income under $150,000
💰 $150 — Married/joint filers with income between $150,000 and $300,000
💰 $100 — Single filers with income under $150,000
📬 NO APPLICATION REQUIRED!
Eligible residents don't have to sign up. The state says the checks will be sent automatically based on 2024 New York State income-tax information. Eligibility generally requires having filed a timely 2024 resident return, having been a full-time New York resident, meeting the applicable income limit and not having been claimed as someone else's dependent.
The rebates are intended to provide some relief from higher household energy costs. They're one-time payments, so this isn't a permanent reduction in your monthly utility bill.
Whatever your view of the state's approach to energy costs, the practical takeaway for Bethlehem-area residents is simple:
📅 Mailing begins September 21
📬 No application necessary
💵 Eligible households receive $100–$200
⏳ Checks will continue going out through December
So don't mistake that envelope from New York State for junk mail! 👀📨
👉 If a little $100–$200 bonus showed up in your mailbox, what would you put it toward — your utility bill, groceries, gas, savings or something else?

REMEMBER JOHNNY ROCKETS? IT’S COMING BACK TO CROSSGATES!

🍔🍟 REMEMBER JOHNNY ROCKETS? IT’S COMING BACK TO CROSSGATES! 🥤🎶
Here’s a little Capital Region nostalgia that may bring back some memories for Bethlehem-area shoppers: Johnny Rockets is returning to Crossgates Mall! 🍔🍟
And remember, Crossgates is less than 3 miles from the Bethlehem Town line, making this comeback pretty close to home for residents of Delmar, Slingerlands, Glenmont and the surrounding area.
The 1950s-inspired diner is expected to reopen later this year, returning to its former location on the lower level near Regal Cinemas.
🍔 Johnny Rockets originally opened at Crossgates in 1998 and served shoppers for roughly 22 years before closing during the pandemic. Now, after several years away, the burgers, fries, shakes and retro diner atmosphere are making a comeback.
For longtime Capital Region residents, this one may be about more than grabbing a burger. It’s the return of a familiar spot where plenty of families and friends stopped for a meal during a day at the mall or before/after heading off to enjoy a movie at the theater. ❤️
📅 WHEN DOES IT OPEN?
An exact opening date has not yet been announced, but the restaurant is expected to return later in 2026.
🍟 Bethlehem — do you remember eating at Johnny Rockets at Crossgates? And what's your first order when it comes back: burger, fries or a milkshake? 😋👇

TUESDAY MORNING
MATH PUZZLER SOLVED!

🧠🔢 TUESDAY MORNING MATH PUZZLER — DID THE 3! CATCH YOU?
Today’s puzzler is:
32 ÷ 8 × 3!
There are two rules that are especially important here: factorials and working multiplication/division from left to right.
✏️ STEP 1: Solve the factorial
The ! means factorial.
3! = 3 × 2 × 1 = 6
So the problem becomes:
32 ÷ 8 × 6
✏️ STEP 2: Work LEFT TO RIGHT
Multiplication and division have equal priority in the order of operations. When both appear, calculate them from left to right.
First:
32 ÷ 8 = 4
Now:
4 × 6 = 24
🎯 FINAL ANSWER: 24 ✅
👨🏫 THE TEACHING POINT
A common mistake would be to multiply 8 × 6 first because some people remember PEMDAS as saying multiplication always comes before division.
It doesn't! ➗✖️
Multiplication and division are on the same level, so you work from left to right.
Therefore:
32 ÷ 8 × 3! = 24 🎉
How did you do? Did you get 24, or did that little ! change your answer? 😃👇
