On October 8, 1942, the War Production Board ordered America's gold mines to stop producing. The war needed miners for copper, not gold. One of the mines forced to close was, at the time, the second-largest lode gold producer in the country.
After the war it tried to come back, but with gold fixed at $35 an ounce, the math never worked. It closed for good in the mid-1950s, and the gold stayed right where it was.
Gold now trades above $4,000. The mine produced about 2.4 million ounces over its life, at grades several times richer than most underground mines work today. A tiny company now owns all of it, valued at under $20 million, and this summer it started drilling again.

Atlas Copco Comptec, part of the global Atlas Copco Group, officially celebrated the opening of its expanded manufacturing facility on Monday, October 26, 2026, marking another important milestone for a company that has been part of the Capital Region since 1980.

The expansion adds 63,000 square feet to the company's existing 45-acre facility, creating additional capacity to manufacture large, advanced industrial compressors used by customers around the world.

STILLWATER, NY — The Bethlehem Central Varsity Girls Soccer Team is heading to the SECTION 2 CLASS AA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME! 🧡🖤
The No. 2 seeded Lady Eagles delivered another outstanding playoff performance Thursday night, October 29, defeating No. 3 Mohonasen 2-0 in the Section 2 Class AA semifinals!
⚽🔥 BRADDOCK'S TWO GOALS SEND THE EAGLES FLYING!
Thursday's matchup got off to an unusual start when Mohonasen's team bus broke down on the way to Stillwater, delaying kickoff by nearly 30 minutes.
Once the game began, both teams battled through a scoreless first half.
But the second half belonged to Bethlehem! 💪
🌟 Maira Braddock stepped up in a BIG way, scoring BOTH goals to propel the Lady Eagles into the championship game!
