🏠🔥⚡ BETHLEHEM WINTER UTILITY BILLS: WHAT WILL NATIONAL GRID CUSTOMERS PAY THIS HEATING SEASON? 💰❄️
📢 ATTENTION BETHLEHEM AREA HOMEOWNERS AND RESIDENTS!
As colder weather approaches, families throughout Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands, Selkirk, and the surrounding Bethlehem area may be wondering how much it will cost to keep their homes warm this winter.
National Grid has released its projected winter energy costs for the Capital Region, and the news is mixed: Natural gas bills are expected to decrease slightly, while electricity bills are projected to increase.
📊 HERE'S WHAT NATIONAL GRID CUSTOMERS CAN EXPECT THIS WINTER:
For the five-month heating season from November 2026 through March 2027:
🔥 NATURAL GAS
Projected average winter cost: $803
Approximately $9 LESS than last winter
⚡ ELECTRICITY
Projected average winter cost: $794
Approximately $22 MORE than last winter
🏠 COMBINED GAS & ELECTRICITY
Projected five-month total: $1,597
Approximately $13 MORE than last winter
These are regional averages, not individual household estimates. Actual costs will depend on energy usage, home size, insulation, heating equipment, and winter temperatures.
💰 WHY ARE ELECTRIC BILLS RISING WHILE NATURAL GAS PRICES ARE FALLING?
Although natural gas supply costs are expected to decline, National Grid customers will continue to see higher delivery charges resulting from a previously approved rate increase.
Utility bills contain two major components:
🔹 Supply Charges: The cost of purchasing electricity or natural gas.
🔹 Delivery Charges: The cost of maintaining and upgrading the infrastructure that brings energy to homes and businesses.
National Grid estimates that customers using both natural gas and electricity will pay approximately $156 more in delivery charges this winter compared with last year.
Those increases are largely offsetting anticipated savings in energy supply costs.
🏡 WHAT ABOUT BETHLEHEM HOMES WITH ELECTRIC HEAT OR HEAT PUMPS?
Residents who rely primarily on electricity for heating could experience higher winter utility bills.
Heat pumps and other electric heating systems generally increase electricity consumption during colder months, meaning prolonged cold spells could significantly affect monthly bills.
❄️ HELP IS AVAILABLE FOR HOUSEHOLDS STRUGGLING WITH HEATING COSTS
National Grid is encouraging customers concerned about affordability to explore assistance programs, payment arrangements, and energy-efficiency options.
💵 HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (HEAP)
Applications are scheduled to open November 2, 2026.
HEAP provides financial assistance to eligible New York households to help cover heating expenses.

⚡ National Grid customer assistance information:
🏠 WHAT THIS MEANS FOR BETHLEHEM RESIDENTS
While the projected overall increase may appear modest for households using both natural gas and electricity, many local families are already managing higher costs for groceries, housing, insurance, and other essentials.
And remember, these are projections. An unusually cold winter could push actual heating expenses higher.

BIG NEWS FOR THE CAPITAL REGION! GLOBALFOUNDRIES ANNOUNCES $21 BILLION CHIP EXPANSION — 1,000 NEW JOBS COMING TO MALTA!
🏭💻🚀 BIG NEWS FOR THE CAPITAL REGION! GLOBALFOUNDRIES ANNOUNCES $21 BILLION CHIP EXPANSION — 1,000 NEW JOBS COMING TO MALTA! 🇺🇸🇯🇵
📢 MAJOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT NEWS WITH CONNECTIONS TO BETHLEHEM!
A major expansion is coming to the Capital Region's semiconductor industry, and the news could have a significant impact on families and workers throughout Bethlehem, Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands, Selkirk, and surrounding communities.
GlobalFoundries, one of the region's largest high-tech employers, has announced a landmark $21 billion U.S.-Japan investment agreement that will accelerate construction of a second computer chip manufacturing plant at its Fab 8 campus in Malta, Saratoga County.
The agreement also opens the door for a potential THIRD chip manufacturing facility at the same location!
🏗️ WHAT'S HAPPENING IN MALTA?
The expansion represents one of the Capital Region's most significant semiconductor manufacturing investments.
🔹 $21 BILLION: Total investment framework involving the United States and Japan.
🔹 $10 BILLION: Initial funding to begin construction of the second chip fabrication plant.
🔹 1,000 NEW JOBS: Additional permanent, highly skilled manufacturing positions expected.
🔹 2,500 CURRENT EMPLOYEES: Approximately the number already working at GlobalFoundries' Malta campus.
🔹 CONSTRUCTION: Expected to begin before the end of 2026.
🔹 PRODUCTION: The new factory is expected to begin manufacturing chips in 2029.
🔹 THIRD FACTORY: A decision on an additional plant is expected in late 2028, with potential production beginning in 2031.
💻 A MAJOR BOOST FOR AMERICAN CHIP MANUFACTURING!
The expansion could more than double the Malta campus's annual semiconductor wafer production capacity.
GlobalFoundries currently produces approximately 400,000 wafers annually at the site.
The second facility is expected to add another 900,000 wafers per year, bringing total annual capacity to approximately 1.3 million wafers!
These chips are essential components in automobiles, communications equipment, industrial technology, and countless electronic devices.
🏡 WHY THIS MATTERS TO BETHLEHEM RESIDENTS
Although the GlobalFoundries campus is located in Malta, its economic influence extends throughout the Capital Region.
Bethlehem is home to residents who already work at GlobalFoundries, and the expansion could create additional opportunities for local professionals, engineers, technicians, skilled tradespeople, and future graduates.
The project could also have broader regional benefits:
👷 More Employment Opportunities: An estimated 1,000 additional permanent positions, along with thousands of construction jobs.
🏠 Regional Housing Demand: Additional employment could increase demand for housing throughout Albany and Saratoga counties, including Bethlehem.
🛍️ Local Business Opportunities: Restaurants, retailers, contractors, and service providers could benefit from increased regional economic activity.
🎓 Career Opportunities for Students: Young people attending Bethlehem Central and other area schools may find additional career pathways in semiconductor manufacturing, engineering, and technology.
🚗 Regional Commuting: The expansion could also mean more Capital Region residents traveling to and from Malta for work.
🇺🇸🇯🇵 A NEW U.S.-JAPAN MANUFACTURING PARTNERSHIP
The investment is part of a broader trade agreement negotiated between the Trump administration and Japan.
Under the arrangement, the two governments will fund the new manufacturing facilities, while GlobalFoundries will provide the technology and operate the plants.
The agreement also supports semiconductor production for Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics, a major supplier to the automotive industry.
New York State's previously announced $575 million in tax incentives for the Malta expansion will remain in place.
📈 A GROWING TECHNOLOGY CORRIDOR IN UPSTATE NEW YORK
The Capital Region has become an increasingly important center for semiconductor manufacturing, research, and development.
With GlobalFoundries expanding in Malta and continued investments in semiconductor technology across New York, the region is positioned for additional opportunities in advanced manufacturing.
For Bethlehem families already connected to the industry, this announcement represents another major development in the region's high-tech economy.
