Bethlehem’s efforts to protect farmland, forests and open space for future generations are receiving special recognition! 🌲🌾

The Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy recently honored the Town of Bethlehem with its 2026 Saving Special Places Award, recognizing an impressive record of land conservation during the past eight years under Town Supervisor David VanLuven.

🌎 MORE THAN 900 ACRES PROTECTED!

Among the major properties preserved during that period are:

🌾 318-acre Historic Heath Farm in Glenmont
🌳 288-acre Normans Kill Ravines Park in the Delmar/Elsmere area
🌲 68-acre community forest in Selkirk
🚜 41-acre Amsler Family Farm property in North Bethlehem

Together with other conservation efforts, more than 900 acres have been protected, helping preserve important natural areas and the community character of Bethlehem. 💚

🤝 A PARTNERSHIP FOR CONSERVATION

The Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy has been an important partner in the Town’s open-space initiatives, working alongside Bethlehem on efforts to permanently protect significant properties throughout the community.

🏆 The Saving Special Places Award recognizes that collaboration and Bethlehem’s sustained commitment to land conservation.

👏 Congratulations to the Town of Bethlehem, Supervisor David VanLuven, Open Space Coordinator Lauren Axford, the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy and everyone who has played a role in protecting these special places!

A special Book Discussion and Signing is coming to Bethlehem Lutheran Church featuring local author Anne O’Brien Carelli, PhD and her latest book, Caregiver Planning Guide. 📖

The book was created for those caring for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia and draws upon the author's experiences as well as those of others.

📘 The guide includes 25 practical checklists designed to help caregivers navigate the many responsibilities and challenges that can arise along the caregiving journey.

That's a significant difference for drivers watching their household budgets!

💰 HOW MUCH COULD YOU SAVE?

Based on an estimated $1 per gallon difference:

🚗 10-gallon fill-up: Save $10
🚙 15-gallon fill-up: Save $15

For someone filling a 15-gallon tank once a week, that could mean approximately $780 in annual savings, assuming the price difference continues!

The arrival of Costco in Guilderland this August has added another competitor to the Capital Region fuel market.

Meanwhile, BJ’s recently opened a new Rotterdam location, where promotional gasoline prices initially reached as low as $2 per gallon.

According to the Times Union, the lower prices have attracted larger crowds, with some motorists traveling farther to fill their tanks.

🚗 IS A WAREHOUSE MEMBERSHIP WORTH IT JUST FOR GAS?

For some drivers, fuel savings alone could help offset the cost of an annual membership.

However, it's worth considering membership fees, travel distance, fuel consumption and changing prices before deciding whether the savings add up.

Today's challenge looks simple, but it's designed to trick you!

5 + 5 × 7 × 0 = ?

Some people will quickly answer 0, but is that correct? Let's work through it using PEMDAS — the Order of Operations!

Remember PEMDAS:

P – Parentheses E – Exponents M/D – Multiplication and Division (left to right) A/S – Addition and Subtraction (left to right)

STEP 1 — MULTIPLY FIRST! ✖️

We start with:

5 + 5 × 7 × 0

First multiply:

5 × 7 = 35

Our expression becomes:

5 + 35 × 0

STEP 2 — CONTINUE MULTIPLYING

35 × 0 = 0

Remember this important rule:

Any number multiplied by zero equals zero!

Now our expression becomes:

5 + 0

STEP 3 — ADD! ➕

5 + 0 = 5

🎯 THE CORRECT ANSWER IS

A common mistake is thinking that because the expression contains multiplication by zero, the entire answer must be zero.

But that's not how the order of operations works!

❌ Incorrect: (5 + 5 × 7) × 0 = 0

✅ Correct: 5 + (5 × 7 × 0) = 5

The zero eliminates the multiplication portion, but the first 5 remains!

Multiplication comes before addition, and multiplying by zero only makes the product zero — not necessarily the entire expression.
