After months of residents raising concerns about traffic congestion, safety and the potential impact of future development, the Bethlehem Town Board has approved spending $65,000 for a detailed traffic study of the Feura Bush Road corridor in Glenmont.

The decision comes as the town continues working through proposed zoning changes that have generated considerable community discussion — particularly over whether increased housing density could put additional pressure on roads and other infrastructure.

Here’s what Bethlehem residents should know. 👇

🚦 19 INTERSECTIONS WILL BE STUDIED

Engineering consultant Greenman-Pedersen Inc. will examine traffic conditions at 19 intersections along Feura Bush, Beacon and Wemple roads.

Intersections will be evaluated based on how effectively they handle traffic. Locations experiencing the poorest operating conditions could receive recommendations for improvements.

🚗 TRAFFIC VOLUME & SPEEDS WILL BE MEASURED

Six locations will receive additional analysis of vehicle speeds and traffic volumes to determine whether traffic-calming measures should be considered.

🚶 PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IS PART OF THE STUDY

Four unsignalized intersections with crosswalks will also be evaluated to determine whether Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) or other improvements may be warranted.

Because Feura Bush Road is a state roadway, some potential improvements would require coordination with New York State.

🏘️ THE BIGGER QUESTION: ZONING & FUTURE GROWTH

The study arrives amid an ongoing debate over Bethlehem's proposed zoning revisions.

Some residents have argued that the town should understand not only today's traffic conditions, but also what Feura Bush Road could look like if currently undeveloped properties are eventually developed at densities permitted under new zoning.

The planned study is primarily intended to establish a baseline of current traffic conditions and identify existing problems and possible improvements.

That distinction has become important.

Some Town Board members have indicated they don't want final zoning decisions made before seeing the traffic findings, while town planning officials have said the zoning process does not necessarily require the completed study before moving forward.

🏗️ AND IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT TRAFFIC

The discussion has expanded into a larger question facing Bethlehem:

How much future growth can the town's infrastructure responsibly support?

Concerns raised include not only roads and intersections, but also water and sewer capacity, electrical and cellular infrastructure, emergency services, fire protection and the ability of first responders to navigate increasing traffic.

Bethlehem Public Works has indicated the town currently has reserve water capacity, although additional analysis is underway to examine potential demand under future development scenarios.

❤️ WHY THIS MATTERS TO BETHLEHEM RESIDENTS

For anyone who regularly travels Feura Bush Road, Route 9W, Wemple Road or the surrounding Glenmont area, this is much more than another municipal study.

The results could help identify existing congestion and safety problems, establish where improvements are needed and provide valuable data as Bethlehem considers how — and where — the community should grow in the years ahead.

With $65,000 in public funds being committed to the study, residents will now have an opportunity to see actual local traffic data added to a debate that has generated significant public participation.

The key is following PEMDAS — and especially remembering to handle what's inside the parentheses first.

Step 1: Parentheses first

Inside the parentheses:

3 × 5 = 15

Our problem is now:

9 × 4 − 15

Step 2: Do the multiplication

9 × 4 = 36

Now we have:

36 − 15

Step 3: Subtract

36 − 15 = 21

💡 Why can this one trip people up?

A common mistake is simply working from left to right and subtracting before completing the multiplication inside the parentheses. Parentheses take priority, so (3 × 5) must be calculated first.

Remember PEMDAS:

P — Parentheses
E — Exponents
M/D — Multiplication & Division, left to right
A/S — Addition & Subtraction, left to right
