🇺🇸🏡 BETHLEHEM CONSIDERS NYS EXPANDED PROPERTY TAX RELIEF FOR DISABLED VETERANS ❤️💙

🇺🇸🏡 BETHLEHEM CONSIDERS NYS EXPANDED PROPERTY TAX RELIEF FOR DISABLED VETERANS ❤️💙

A new New York State law could bring significant property tax relief to eligible disabled veterans—but local governments and school districts must first choose to adopt it.

Signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul, the legislation authorizes up to a 100% property tax exemption for qualifying veterans who are determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to be permanently and totally disabled due to military service.

Here's What You Need to Know:

🇺🇸 Who May Qualify?
✔️ Veterans whose primary residence is in New York.
✔️ The home must be owned by the eligible veteran.
✔️ Eligibility is based on a VA determination of being permanently and totally disabled—not necessarily a 100% disability rating.

🏛️ It's Not Automatic
Before anyone can receive the exemption:
• Local taxing jurisdictions—including towns, counties, and school districts—must each vote to adopt the program.
• Eligible veterans would still need to submit an application if the exemption is approved locally.

📅 When Could It Take Effect?
The law becomes effective October 1, 2026, but because of property tax assessment schedules, qualifying veterans may not see the benefit until the 2027 or 2028 tax years.

📍 What About Bethlehem?

Town officials say they're reviewing the legislation.

Bethlehem Supervisor David VanLuven said the proposal deserves careful evaluation and indicated the town is open to considering it.

Town Board member Tom Schnurr also expressed support for reviewing the measure, noting that veterans who served the country should receive the benefits they have earned, while emphasizing the importance of understanding its financial impact before moving forward.

According to the Town Assessor:
🏡 Approximately 217 Bethlehem veterans currently receive some form of property tax exemption.
📊 The town currently exempts nearly $11 million in assessed property value through existing veterans' exemption programs.

📍 Albany County Also Reviewing Proposal

Albany County officials are preparing legislation for the County Legislature to consider.

County officials estimate roughly 350 veterans could qualify for the expanded exemption if adopted. They also note the proposal is considered revenue-neutral, meaning it would redistribute a small portion of the tax burden among taxable properties rather than reduce overall tax revenue.

🇺🇸 Veterans Organizations Voice Support

The American Legion Blanchard-Currey Post 1040 in Delmar has expressed support for the legislation and hopes the county, Town of Bethlehem, and Bethlehem Central School District all choose to participate.

A letter-writing campaign has reportedly begun encouraging local governments to opt into the program.

As discussions continue, residents can expect additional information from local officials as they evaluate the proposal and its potential impact on taxpayers and qualifying veterans.

⚡🏗️ NEW YORK HITS PAUSE ON NEW DATA CENTERS! HOCHUL ANNOUNCES STATEWIDE MORATORIUM 🤖🔌

New York is putting the brakes on most new large-scale data center projects—for now.

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced an executive order establishing a limited statewide moratorium on new data centers while the state develops consistent environmental and infrastructure standards for these rapidly growing facilities.

Data centers, which house thousands of computer servers and power many artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and digital services, have become a hot topic across New York as demand for electricity continues to grow.

📋 What's Changing?

⚡ The state will temporarily pause permits for most new large-scale data centers while officials complete a statewide environmental review.

🔍 The Department of Public Service has been directed to prepare a comprehensive environmental impact study examining issues such as:

🌎 Energy demand
💧 Water use and water quality
🌬️ Air quality
⚖️ Impacts on surrounding communities

🏗️ The state will also develop consistent standards for future data center proposals and create a framework outlining community benefits developers should provide, including potential investments in local infrastructure, workforce development, and other public improvements.

⚠️ Are There Exceptions?

Yes.

🏥 Data centers supporting hospitals and academic institutions will not be affected.

The executive order also applies only to larger facilities with projected energy demands of 50 megawatts or more.

💡 Why Is This Happening?

Supporters of the pause say it gives New York time to better understand how large data centers could affect:

🔌 The electric grid
💲 Utility costs
🌿 Natural resources
🏘️ Local communities

Environmental organizations have voiced concerns that rapidly expanding data center development could increase electricity demand, strain water supplies, generate additional noise, and require significant land use.

📍Closer to Home

The issue has already reached the Capital Region, where proposals for new data centers—including one planned for the former Kenwood Academy campus in Albany—have generated public discussion and local opposition.

State officials say the temporary pause will remain in place while the environmental review is completed and new statewide guidelines are developed.

What do you think? Should New York slow down data center development until more safeguards are in place, or should these projects move forward to support growing technology and AI needs?

🧩☕ TUESDAY MORNING MATH PUZZLER SOLVED! ☕🧩

🧩TUESDAY MORNING MATH PUZZLER SOLVED!🧩

The problem is:

10 − 10 × 10 = ?

Step 1: Use the Order of Operations

Multiplication must be completed before subtraction.

So first:

10 × 10 = 100

Now the expression becomes:

10 − 100

Step 2: Subtract

10 − 100 = -90

🎯 Final Answer: -90

📚 Teaching Tip

A common mistake is solving from left to right:

10 − 10 = 0
0 × 10 = 0

But multiplication comes before subtraction, so the correct order is:

10 − 10 × 10
⬇️
10 − 100
⬇️
-90

Remember:

PEMDAS

  • Parentheses

  • Exponents

  • Multiplication and Division

  • Addition and Subtraction

👏 Did you get -90 on your first try?
