From cell phones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes, toys and countless other devices, lithium-ion batteries have become part of everyday life. But as New York sees an increase in fires involving improperly discarded batteries, fire prevention and recycling experts are urging residents to pay closer attention to what happens to those batteries when they reach the end of their useful lives.

The issue also has particular relevance here in the Bethlehem area, where residents have been discussing lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and their potential role in our community.

It is important to distinguish between the two issues: a utility-scale BESS facility is very different from a discarded cell phone or power-tool battery entering the waste stream. But they share an underlying technology, and both conversations highlight why understanding lithium-ion batteries, fire prevention and proper handling is increasingly important.

Lithium-ion batteries store a significant amount of energy in a relatively small package. If a battery is damaged, crushed, punctured, overheated or short-circuited, it can potentially ignite.

That becomes especially problematic when batteries are tossed into household trash or recycling. A battery can be crushed by collection equipment or machinery at a waste facility, potentially starting a fire among surrounding materials.

Recent fires around New York have prompted renewed efforts to educate consumers about keeping these batteries out of the regular waste stream.

And there is another community impact: fires involving garbage trucks, transfer stations and waste-processing facilities can mean equipment damage, emergency response costs, environmental concerns and ultimately expenses that may be borne by municipalities and taxpayers.

There is good news: we have convenient recycling options close to home.

According to the Town of Bethlehem, rechargeable batteries — including lithium-ion batteries — should NOT be placed in household trash. New York has prohibited disposal of rechargeable batteries as solid waste since 2011, and retailers that sell covered rechargeable batteries are required to provide take-back opportunities.

The Town specifically identifies Lowe's, Staples and Walmart in Glenmont as locations appearing in the Call2Recycle directory. The Town also notes that Lowe's in Glenmont has a self-service recycling kiosk near its customer-service entrance.

Residents can also bring batteries other than ordinary non-rechargeable alkaline batteries to the Town's spring and fall Household Hazardous Waste collection events.

⚠️ One important clarification: The Rupert Road Transfer Station accepts many materials, including electronics, but its current information specifically states that batteries are NOT accepted there.

The Town says today's ordinary non-rechargeable alkaline batteries — including common AA, AAA, C and D batteries — may be placed in household trash. The Town recommends taping the terminals or individually bagging the batteries before disposal.

Rechargeable batteries are different: don't put them in the trash.

Whether the discussion involves a proposed large-scale BESS project or simply the batteries powering devices inside our homes, battery education is becoming an increasingly important community-safety issue.

Proper disposal is one part of that conversation that every household can act on today.

A few extra minutes spent identifying and properly recycling an old rechargeable battery can help protect sanitation workers, firefighters, waste facilities, municipal equipment, our environment — and our community. ❤️♻️🚒

NEW SCOTLAND, N.Y. — A 36-year-old Delmar man is facing multiple felony charges following a Saturday evening crash in the Town of New Scotland, according to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded at approximately 8:40 p.m. to the area of Delaware Turnpike and Clipp Road for a reported motor vehicle crash.

Authorities said deputies observed indications that the driver, identified as Lucas Giacone of Delmar, may have been impaired. He was subsequently taken into custody after allegedly failing standardized field sobriety tests.

During the investigation, deputies also reported discovering an illegal assault rifle equipped with a high-capacity magazine, along with two additional .22-caliber high-capacity magazines.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Giacone was charged with five counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated driving while intoxicated, and multiple traffic infractions.

He was transported to the Albany County Correctional Facility, with an arraignment scheduled for Sunday.

⚖️ All charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

We at Bethlehem Local News are deeply saddened to learn that one of the drivers involved in the serious collision at Delaware Avenue and Fisher Boulevard on Monday morning, August 24, has passed away.

The crash occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. and involved two vehicles in a head-on collision. One driver suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital following the crash.

This is heartbreaking news for our community. What began last Monday as a traffic alert and serious accident investigation has now become a tragic loss of life.

❤️ Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and loved ones of the individual who passed away. We also continue to keep everyone affected by this tragedy in our thoughts.

We thank our Bethlehem Police Department, first responders, EMS personnel and everyone who assisted at the scene and in the aftermath of this collision.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash Update – Delaware Avenue

The Bethlehem Police Department is providing an update regarding the serious motor vehicle crash that occurred on Delaware Avenue in the area of Fisher Boulevard on August 24, 2026.

Kevin P. Hynes, age 62, of Wynantskill, NY, who sustained serious injuries in the crash, passed away over the weekend as a result of those injuries.

The investigation determined that Hynes was traveling westbound on Delaware Avenue when a vehicle operated by Daniel Holleran, age 71, of Holland, PA, failed to yield the right of way while attempting to make a left turn and began entering Hynes’ lane of travel. Hynes successfully avoided a collision with Holleran’s vehicle; however, during the evasive maneuver, Hynes’ vehicle entered the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a vehicle operated by Christopher M. Hadsell, age 48, of East Berne.

As a result of the investigation, Holleran was issued a Uniform Traffic Ticket for Failure to Yield Right of Way While Making a Left Turn, in violation of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1141.

The investigation further determined that driver impairment was not a contributing factor in the crash.

The Bethlehem Police Department extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Kevin P. Hynes.

DELMAR, NY – August 24, 2026 – At approximately 7:27 a.m., the Bethlehem Police Department responded to a report of a two-vehicle head-on collision on Delaware Avenue in the area of Fisher Boulevard in Delmar. Fire and EMS personnel also responded to the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a passenger vehicle traveling westbound on Delaware Avenue entered the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a vehicle traveling in the eastbound lane. One of the vehicle operators sustained serious physical injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to the hospital.

The investigation further determined that neither alcohol nor illegal substances were contributing factors in the crash.

The crash remains under active investigation by the Bethlehem Police Department. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
