There are certain traditions that just feel like fall in Upstate New York — and apple picking with family and friends has to be near the top of the list! 🍎🍁

This past Sunday, we made the short trip from the Bethlehem area out to Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont for a morning filled with apples, cider donuts and plenty of fall fun.

🌧️ A little early-morning rain may have dampened our shoes, but it certainly didn't dampen our spirits! Once we got into the orchard, we had our choice of Gala, Ruby Mac and premium Honeycrisp apples. 🍎🍏

After filling our bags, it was time for another essential part of the experience — a visit to the Farm Store for fresh coffee, warm cider donuts and locally made apple cider. ☕️🍩🍎

It’s hard to beat that combination on a cool September morning!

🍂 PLANNING YOUR OWN APPLE-PICKING TRIP?

Indian Ladder Farms is now open for the apple-picking season 7 days a week from 9:00 AM–4:30 PM. And here's a helpful tip from our visit: credit and debit cards are accepted right at the apple-picking shack in the fields, so you don't necessarily need to bring cash.

Whether you're making memories with the kids, meeting up with friends or simply looking for an excuse to enjoy some cider donuts, this is one of those classic local experiences that reminds us why fall in the Capital Region is so special. ❤️🍁

The question may be shifting from "Will AI take my job?" to "How can I learn to use AI to make myself more valuable in my job?"

Artificial intelligence isn't just changing technology — it's beginning to change how people throughout the Capital Region do their jobs, and new research suggests the impact may not be evenly distributed.

Women could face particular challenges because they represent a large share of workers in administrative, clerical and back-office positions, occupations where many everyday tasks can increasingly be assisted or automated by AI.

📍 WHY THIS MATTERS IN THE ALBANY AREA

According to a Times Union analysis, Albany has a higher share of AI-exposed jobs than both New York State and the nation. Local occupations with significant employment and high exposure include:

📞 Customer service representatives
🗂️ Secretaries and administrative assistants
📊 Accountants and auditors
🏢 Office and administrative support supervisors

In New York, women account for approximately 84% of workers in administrative back-office positions, according to information cited from the Governor's Office.

But AI exposure doesn't necessarily mean a job will disappear. That's an important distinction.

Research discussed in the report found that roughly 70% of workers in highly AI-exposed occupations may be relatively well positioned to transition to other employment if displaced. Clerical and administrative workers, however, could have a more difficult transition. The research is currently a working paper and has not yet been peer reviewed.

💻 THE OTHER SIDE OF THE AI STORY: OPPORTUNITY

Local workforce experts say they're already seeing AI change how some jobs are performed rather than simply eliminating them.

In areas including customer service, human resources and finance, employees who understand how to incorporate AI into their existing work may be able to become more productive.

And that leads to what may be one of the biggest takeaways for Bethlehem and Capital Region workers:

👉 You don't necessarily need to become a programmer or AI engineer.

Learning how to use AI effectively within the career you already have could become as fundamental to the workplace as learning Microsoft Office and other digital tools was in previous decades.

Organizations such as the Capital District Women's Employment & Resource Center are already incorporating AI education into workforce training while continuing to emphasize human skills including leadership, collaboration and adaptability.

📚 New York's FutureWorks Commission is also examining AI's workforce impact and is expected to make recommendations aimed at helping workers navigate the transition.

For residents working in Albany's large government, professional, financial, health care and administrative employment sectors, AI literacy may increasingly become a valuable career skill — even for jobs that have never been considered "technology jobs."

The question may be shifting from "Will AI take my job?" to "How can I learn to use AI to make myself more valuable in my job?"

If you’ve walked through the woods around Bethlehem, Delmar, Slingerlands, Glenmont or Selkirk and noticed struggling or dying beech trees, what’s happening elsewhere in New York may hit close to home.

A recent Adirondack Explorer report highlights the continuing spread of Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) deeper into the Adirondacks — part of a much larger forest-health problem affecting New York. Here in Albany County, forest-health organizations are also actively asking residents to help identify and monitor the disease.

🍃 WHAT IS BEECH LEAF DISEASE?

BLD affects both native American beech and ornamental beech trees and is associated with a microscopic nematode. The disease can affect trees of all ages, with younger trees generally declining more rapidly.

For Bethlehem-area residents who have watched beech trees decline in our local forests, the concern extends well beyond losing individual trees. American beech is an important part of New York's forests, providing nesting habitat and beech nuts that serve as food for birds and other wildlife.

🔎 WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR?

Watch beech leaves for distinctive dark-green bands between the veins, especially when looking upward through leaves toward the sunlight. Other warning signs include curled or leathery leaves, reduced foliage, thinning crowns and eventually branch dieback.

🌲 WHY THIS MATTERS LOCALLY

The loss of beech can gradually change the composition of a forest. As declining trees open gaps in the canopy, the additional sunlight can alter what grows underneath, potentially benefiting aggressive vines and invasive shrubs. Losing beech also means losing an important food source for wildlife.

Unfortunately, there is currently no practical cure for BLD across natural forests, making monitoring and research especially important. Residents who spot suspected BLD can report observations to New York State forest-health officials.

Today’s problem is:

45 ÷ 9 × 3!

The key is remembering order of operations — and especially what that little ! means.

The exclamation point represents a factorial.

3! = 3 × 2 × 1 = 6

So our problem becomes:

45 ÷ 9 × 6

Multiplication and division have the same priority, so when both appear, work from LEFT to RIGHT.

First:

45 ÷ 9 = 5

Now we have:

5 × 6

5 × 6 = 30

A common mistake is to multiply 9 × 6 first. But multiplication does not automatically come before division.

Once the factorial has been evaluated, multiplication and division are on the same level of the order of operations. You solve them left to right.

So:

45 ÷ 9 × 3! = 30 🎉
