Here’s some good news for neighbors helping neighbors in Bethlehem! ❤️

The Town of Bethlehem Senior Services Department announced that Friends of Bethlehem Seniors has received a $15,000 grant from Hannaford Supermarkets to help expand the Bethlehem Food Pantry.

The funding will be used to purchase additional refrigeration and freezer space, allowing the pantry to store more fresh, healthy and nutritious foods for local residents experiencing food insecurity.

🍎 Why does this matter? The Bethlehem Food Pantry provides more than 25,000 meals to families each year. Expanding its cold-storage capacity means the pantry will be better equipped to offer fresh and perishable foods in addition to traditional pantry staples.

Located inside Bethlehem Town Hall in Delmar, the pantry operates through a partnership between the Town of Bethlehem and the nonprofit Friends of Bethlehem Seniors, with volunteers and community partners playing an important role in its work.

Town officials, Senior Services representatives and volunteers expressed their appreciation for Hannaford's investment and its support of Bethlehem residents in need.

👏 A big THANK YOU to Hannaford, Friends of Bethlehem Seniors, Bethlehem Senior Services and all of the volunteers and community members who help keep our local food pantry going.

This is a great example of a local business, nonprofit organization, town services and volunteers working together to make a tangible difference right here at home. 🏡❤️

Bethlehem Central senior Ava Austin has already built quite a field hockey résumé — and she isn’t finished yet!

The standout Eagles midfielder is entering her final BCHS season as one of the Capital Region’s players to watch, with a college commitment to Drexel University and another goal still in front of her: helping Bethlehem defend its Section 2 Class A championship.

Austin has been a varsity starter since her freshman year and played a key role in Bethlehem’s 2025 sectional championship, when the Eagles defeated Guilderland 1-0 for the Class A crown. Austin assisted on the championship game's only goal.

🔥 Her accomplishments continue to add up:

🏑 12 goals and 12 assists in 2025
⭐ Times Union First-Team All-Star
🏅 All-State selection as a junior
🇺🇸 Two-time USA Field Hockey Nexus Championships participant
🐉 Committed to play Division I field hockey at Drexel University
🎯 27 career goals and 26 career assists through the Eagles' first four games this season.

And she has started 2026 right where she left off, recording three goals and three assists through four games. The Times Union highlighted not only Austin's offensive production but also her ability to anticipate plays, defend and create opportunities for teammates with her passing.

Perhaps most impressive is that the college commitment hasn't changed the mission. Austin continues working to improve as she prepares for the next level while helping the Eagles pursue another postseason run.

👏 Congratulations, Ava, on everything you've accomplished so far — and best of luck to Ava and the entire Bethlehem Field Hockey team as they chase another Section 2 title!

What a day for Voorheesville Cross Country! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🔥

Last Saturday, the Blackbirds hosted their annual Blackbird Invitational at Swift Park, and the Voorheesville girls delivered a tremendous performance on their home course — winning the team championship with just 24 points! 🏆👏

The Blackbirds placed an incredible FOUR runners among the top five finishers:

🥇 Savannah Schmidt — 1st
🥈 Avery Grant — 2nd
🏅 Shayla Hyman — 4th
🏅 Salma Sayahi — 5th

That’s some serious team running! 💪🖤💛

The Voorheesville boys finished 4th overall with 105 points, highlighted by another outstanding individual performance as Carter Ward raced to a 2nd-place finish! 🥈🏃‍♂️

Congratulations to all of the Blackbird runners, coaches and families on a great day of racing at Swift Park. Hosting an invitational takes plenty of work behind the scenes, too, so a big shout-out to everyone who helped make the event possible! 👏

Some community investments don't have to be huge to make a meaningful difference — and Scotch Pine Park in Voorheesville is a great example! 🌲🛝

The Village of Voorheesville has announced new improvements to the neighborhood park after receiving a $15,000 award through Albany County's 2025 Parks and Playground Grant. The Village thanked the Albany County Legislature, Parks and Recreation Department and County Executive's Office for supporting the project.

The upgrades include new interactive play panels designed to encourage discovery, imagination and social interaction while helping children develop skills such as coordination, rhythm and movement. A new Inchwood Climber incorporates natural elements that complement the park's outdoor setting. 🌳🧒

And this really is a neighborhood park: according to the Village, the Scotch Pine neighborhood is home to 166 residents, making this pocket of recreation and nature an important community space.

👏 Congratulations to the Village and everyone involved in bringing these improvements to life. Investments in our neighborhood parks give families more opportunities to play, explore, spend time outdoors and connect with their neighbors.

Happy Friday! Today’s Bethlehem Local News Morning Math Puzzler is:

42 − 12 × 3!

This one tests PEMDAS — but there’s an extra twist: that little factorial symbol (!) makes a BIG difference! 👀

The ! means factorial.

3! = 3 × 2 × 1 = 6

So our problem becomes:

42 − 12 × 6

According to the order of operations, multiplication comes before subtraction.

12 × 6 = 72

Now we're left with:

42 − 72

42 − 72 = −30

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE: If you calculate 42 − 12 = 30 first and then multiply, you'll get the wrong answer.

Remember:

🧠 Factorial first → Multiplication next → Subtraction last

And yes — a negative answer is perfectly valid! ➖😉
