ALBANY — A major infrastructure investment along the Hudson River is moving forward, and part of the Port of Albany-Rensselaer’s long-term expansion reaches directly into the Town of Bethlehem. ⚓🏗️

Work is underway to strengthen and modernize the Port of Albany’s marine terminal infrastructure, part of a broader program of more than $100 million in completed and planned improvements across the port’s Hudson River properties.

The current project includes replacing and upgrading approximately 1,160 linear feet of wharf and replacing about 930 linear feet of on-dock railroad track. 🚂⚓

💰 The work is being supported in part by a $9.9 million grant from the New York State Department of Transportation’s Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program.

The improvements aren't simply cosmetic repairs.

Port infrastructure must accommodate increasingly large and heavy cargo produced by regional manufacturers. The upgraded dock is being designed to accommodate loads of up to approximately 1,000 pounds per square foot, compared with about 400 pounds per square foot previously.

The project is also using ultra-high-performance concrete, incorporating steel fibers to create a surface described as substantially stronger and more durable than traditional concrete.

That durability is particularly important at a working port handling heavy equipment and commodities while being exposed to demanding Hudson River conditions year after year.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, and port officials report the project remains on schedule and on budget.

Quite a bit.

The Port of Albany owns property immediately south of the Albany city line in the Town of Bethlehem at Beacon Island, where plans call for approximately 500 additional feet of wharf.

That makes Bethlehem part of the port's broader regional infrastructure footprint and places a piece of this major maritime and industrial network within our own community.

The Port of Albany reports an annual economic impact of approximately $813 million and says its operations support about 1,400 local jobs.

The port also provides an important transportation link for Capital Region manufacturers. Extremely large equipment that would be difficult to move long distances by highway can instead reach the port by rail and other means before traveling down the Hudson by barge. 🚢

For Bethlehem residents, the story goes beyond construction happening a few miles north.

The continued development of Beacon Island in Bethlehem means decisions involving port infrastructure, economic development, transportation, industrial activity and the Hudson River increasingly have a direct local connection.

There is also a broader economic story: investments that allow Capital Region manufacturers to move larger products to national and international markets can help support jobs and economic activity throughout the region.

⚓ The Hudson River has helped drive the Capital Region's economy for generations — and these investments are preparing that transportation network for the next generation of manufacturing and commerce.

VOORHEESVILLE — Families with elementary school students will have one extra day of summer vacation this year as ongoing construction challenges have pushed back the first day of classes. 🎒📚

The Voorheesville Board of Education has approved moving the Voorheesville Elementary School opening from Tuesday, September 8, to Wednesday, September 9.

Other students in the district are still scheduled to begin school on September 8.

According to Superintendent Frank Macri, several issues tightened an already challenging construction schedule at the elementary school.

🌧️ Heavy rainfall flooded excavated footings, delaying site work and requiring district maintenance employees to assist with cleanup and mitigation.

⚠️ Previously unidentified asbestos was discovered in a portion of the school's main stairwell that had not been sampled before demolition. The discovery requires proper abatement procedures, including a required notification period before the work can proceed.

🏗️ A tight construction turnover schedule was another concern. Portions of the building are expected to be returned to the district by September 1, leaving custodial staff and teachers with very limited time to clean, prepare and organize the school for approximately 500 students.

District officials emphasized that the one-day adjustment is intended to provide additional preparation time and reduce uncertainty for students, families and staff — rather than an indication that they currently expect the building to be unable to open.

The work is part of the $25.2 million capital project approved overwhelmingly by district voters in December 2022.

Approximately $9.9 million was designated for work at the elementary school, while another $6.6 million went toward construction of the district's new bus garage, which is now operational. 🚌

Elementary school improvements include:

🔹 Consolidating administrative, health and elementary offices
🔹 Converting the former bus garage into a cafeteria
🔹 Creating a new secure entrance vestibule
🔹 Adding and reorganizing instructional spaces
🔹 New music and art classrooms
🔹 A guidance suite
🔹 Library makerspace
🔹 Science labs

Despite the setbacks, significant progress has been made. The cafeteria is nearing completion, the main office is largely finished, downstairs spaces have been returned to the district, and exterior concrete and paving work are moving forward.

Voorheesville Teachers Association President Kelly Lendrum raised concerns about the short window available for custodians and teachers to prepare classrooms following construction.

District officials acknowledged similar difficulties occurred last year and said a new procedure is in place: once custodial employees finish cleaning a room, it will be locked and documented as complete. Contractors who subsequently create additional cleanup will be responsible for restoring the room.

NEW SCOTLAND — The Albany County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a serious two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Westerlo man and left another person critically injured Saturday evening.

According to Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, deputies were called to the intersection of State Route 32 and Tarrytown Road shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, August 22, following reports of a serious motor vehicle crash.

When deputies arrived, they found two vehicles with substantial damage.

Preliminary findings indicate an Acura traveling southbound on Route 32 collided head-on with a Subaru traveling northbound.

💔 74-year-old Mark Rose of Westerlo, who was driving the Subaru, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A passenger in the Subaru, 63-year-old Linda Rose of Westerlo, was transported to Albany Medical Center in critical condition.

The Acura was driven by 24-year-old Anthony Depoalo of Schenectady, who was not injured. His passenger, 26-year-old Colin Dineen of Schenectady, was transported to Albany Medical Center with minor injuries.

The Albany County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Team responded to the scene and is conducting a crash reconstruction as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Albany County Sheriff’s EMS, New York State Police, the Albany County District Attorney’s Office, Onesquethaw Volunteer Fire Company, Berne Fire District and Slingerlands Fire Department.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not announced any additional findings at this time.

📞 WITNESSES SOUGHT: Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have information that could assist investigators is asked to contact the Albany County Sheriff’s Office at (518) 765-2352.

The key is remembering the Order of Operations. This is where PEMDAS comes in:

P – Parentheses
E – Exponents
M/D – Multiplication & Division, left to right
A/S – Addition & Subtraction, left to right

32 ÷ 4 = 8

Now our problem becomes:

32 + 8

32 + 8 = 40

A common mistake would be adding 32 + 32 = 64 first and then dividing by 4 to get 16. But without parentheses telling us to add first, division has priority over addition.

So the answer is 40! 💯
